Code Naming NU4 - We have a winner!

On Tues May 26th, after a community vote, we decided on Canopy as the new code name for NU4. The message below is the record of the naming process.

In the forum poll from 5/18 - 5/26, the options were Canopy, Merkleberry, Roots and “Other.” 13 people participated and Canopy got 38% of the votes along with most “likes” of any suggestion in the comment thread.

We have finalized feature selection for NU4 and it’s time to pick a code name. NU4 includes ZIP 1014, an incredible milestone for us as a community in terms of self-governance and sustainability. ZIP 1014 establishes a Development Fund and governance process for Zcash.

To that end, the code name for NU4 should evoke themes of abundance, stable foundation, and fertile soil upon which many many more projects will grow! Let’s hear suggestions and take a poll ahead of of the next Zeal call to settle on a name.

Instructions:

  • Add your suggestions in the comments and “like” your favorite suggestions.
  • Monday 5/18, I’ll set a poll in the community forum with the top 5 suggestions.
  • Voting will conclude 5/25 and the final name for NU4 will be announced at the May Zeal call.

The previous protocol version names have all had a plant-development theme:

A lichen is a composite organism living among filaments of multiple fungi in a mutualistic relationship. They live in a variety of environments. It is estimated that 6% of Earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. Lichens can live for a long-time if undisturbed, some lichens are among the oldest living things.

It is a heavy, hard wood with a somewhat coarse texture, often with an interlocked or wavy grain. The interlocked grain of this wood, like that of many tropical woods, can make it difficult to work. (AH! some people might say that cutting-edge cryptography is similarly difficult to work). It’s been used as decorative handles for shotguns, for guitars and even in Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz automobiles. Because of its hardness (read: durability), it can also be used for skis.

GREENHEART

(Chlorocardium rodiei)

Greenheart is a wood of extremes. Overall, it’s probably the strongest wood in the entire world (seriously), with off-the-charts [MOE] and [MOR] and [crushing strength]. It also has exceptional rot resistance and weathering characteristics, especially in marine environments.

Why you’ve never heard of it: This stuff is just a pain to work with. It’s hard to glue, hard to saw, and it’s also hard to find.

The wood is extremely hard and strong, so hard that it cannot be worked with standard tools.

The Fram and the Endurance , made famous in the polar expeditions of Amundsen and Shackleton, were the two strongest wooden ships ever constructed and were sheathed in greenheart to prevent them from being crushed by ice.

Canopy - the canopy is the aboveground portion of a plant community, formed by the collection of individual plant crowns. In a forest, it can be a vibrant and hospitable habitat for a variety of creatures. The rain forest canopy holds 90% of the animals in that environment.

Loam - Loam is soil made up of sand, silt and clay. It is found in a majority of successful farms in regions around the world known for their fertile land. Loam is considered ideal for gardening and agricultural uses because it retains nutrients well and retains water while still allowing excess water to drain away.
