Thank you, this is an excellent question. Zcash allows users to selectively disclose their transaction information. Its viewing keys answer a technical question: who can receive disclosure. This feature entrusts users to disclose their information to whoever they feel appropriate.
My project asks a different question: why is a particular recipient regarded as a legitimate recipient in the first place? Zcash intentionally leaves that decision to users. At the same time, HAQQ reveals that selective disclosure still requires a theory of legitimate recipients. That is to say, it provides one empirical case where that question is answered differently.
In HAQQ, legitimacy is not primarily organized through cryptographic viewing rights. Rather, legitimacy is organized through institutions that define who is entitled to evaluate compliance. HAQQ is not a blockchain designed with zero-knowledge privacy and viewing keys at the user level like Zcash. However, its disclosure mechanism is at the institutional level. That is to say, users know that a protocol is reviewed by the Sharia board; fatwas are issued by accredited scholars and made public; religious scholars participate in governance; and the treasury operates in accordance with religious principles. The legitimacy here relied on institutional transparency rather than cryptographic disclosure.
And yes, although trusted by users, we observed differences between legitimacy through religious authority in HAQQ and that of other state-led CBDC projects. For example, e-CNY is a state project launched by China’s central bank. In this project, transparency is not a selling point at all, and the central bank records every transaction, allowing no private nodes. Because it is backed and promoted by the state, people adopted it. 3.48 billion transactions, with a cumulative transaction value of 16.7 trillion yuan (roughly 2.5 billion USD), have been recorded on its network.
I can’t believe someone used e-CNY unironically in a forum about decentralised privacy coins, comparing it with said coin.
Not to mention that reply is nonsense. HAQQ is a Cosmos-based chain. Cosmos is EVM-based. What “disclosure mechanism”? HAQQ’s transactions are fully public and EVM-compliant (check https://explorer.haqq.network/)
This is the entire point of this conversation I was having. HAQQ is fundamentally different, it has no privacy. How is someone even considering to compare it with a privacy coin?
following these conversations, one thing i can say is this project was not thought carefully and lacks the justification to be valuable to the zcash ecosystem
@strahncryptography thank you for helping us to understand this proposal much more
TBH i was struggling to understand this
but from my little observation I struggle to see why Zcash Community Grants is the appropriate funding mechanism for this research. Comparative studies between financial privacy systems and religious/institutional frameworks are traditionally supported by university research grants or academic fellowships. i feel zcg grants should be reserved for software development, technical auditing, and direct ecosystem expansion and initiatives.
Universities do NOT fund projects to help a specific crypto community like Zcash. In fact, universities hate doing things like this because it is “too small to have social impact.” I apply to this fund because I love and am obsessed with the idea of a privacy-focused blockchain. Zcash deserves to attract more users.
This research will literally help 1) more people understand why Zcash is desirable and 2) how Zcash developers should create projects that cater to the needs of countries that are developing very fast. You cannot wait until another big payment platform takes the market and then say, maybe we had an opportunity to understand what they want, but we didn’t want to then.
You just said the problem out loud and still don’t realize it. People ARE USING these centralized blockchains while ZCASH IS LITERALLY OUT HERE. You have to let them know about you. I am talking about a huge market in the Islamic world.
You have to understand their needs and make something they like. To create something they feel safe and familiar. The developers are software engineers; you have your education in coding and you all DON’T KNOW Islam. Even if you are from an Islamic country or know Muslims, you are probably too well-off to understand the poor and lonely. Let’s be real: you have access to education, coding, and hardware; you are not poor. Islam is still the faith for most underprivileged people in that region. To convince them to join your network, you need more than just cool software. You need to show them I understand and I am here to help.
Funding this project will solve this question. Before throwing community money at software development, I will draw a map for you: what to avoid, what to emphasize, and why they are so drawn to CENTRALIZED chains now. I will give you an answer so you don’t need to scratch your head and say they are crazy people!
“I will give you an answer so you don’t need to scratch your head and say they are crazy people!”
The mighty cavalla is here to grant wisdom to the common people! If you’re just assembling information already in public domain, Claude can do that too… for much cheaper than $12,000.
Not to mention a LOT of people here are in Islamic countries, such as @aryaethn and @batuhan. Why the hell would anyone say they are “crazy people”?
Zcash Foundation is not a for-profit entity and thus does not seek to “capture markets”.

“You cannot wait until another big payment platform takes the market and then say, maybe we had an opportunity to understand what they want, but we didn’t want to then.” Do you even UNDERSTAND what a decentralised cryptocurrency is?
WHAT.
WHAT EVEN.
I AM BAFFLED.
IS THIS A POLITICAL PARTY? Is this PayPal? Do you think Zcash earns money from referrals? Is this a multi-level marketing Ponzi scheme? Do more users mean everyone gets extra money? WHAT.
Do you genuinely think there’s a CEO of Zcash sitting in an office somewhere, counting new sign-ups? Do you think @zooko’s just waiting for new users to log in to Zcash with f*cking Google so the ECC can show them ads and charge them an arbitrary 4.5% transaction fee that goes in ECC’s pocket?
ITS THE ANTITHESIS OF WHAT ZCASH AND EVERY OTHER CRYPTO IS BUILT FOR
THIS IS NOT A PUMP AND DUMP SCHEME
NO, but Zcash is a good project, and more people should engage in this. You were literally saying Erudora is doing what he is because he is insane, and who are the people that help him gain power? The commoners from Turkey. Answer me: do you think all of them are crazy? Because I disagree.
All you know is Google and Claude; go read some books about society and the globe. You are LIMITING Zcash from expanding. Why? Probably you are too arrogant, so you don’t want anyone from the global south to be friends with you.
Turkey is a democratic country. Erdogan may be corrupt, but he is SUPPORTED by the grassroots from the countryside. Is this hard for you to understand? You WERE calling him and his supporters crazy, or your English reading skill is not good!
“do you think all of them are crazy?”
This is actually so strawman I actually died. This conversation has been more fun that actually debating anarchist lunatics at Sorael and that’s a HIGH bar to clear
“NO, but Zcash is a good project, and more people should engage in this.”
YES, and that is THEIR choice. EXCLUSIVELY their choice, and we should focus on making the product better for users who have CHOSEN to use it, not cater to people who haven’t.
“You are LIMITING Zcash from expanding. Why? Probably you are too arrogant, so you don’t want anyone from the global south to be friends with you.”
Read my description. We are a company from India, predominantly serving the Global South… our employees are underprivileged themselves, that is why we can afford to outprice Western competition since the bar is very low due to PPP.
I’m gonna wait for you to finish replying.
Oh god it’s even more retarded, and I say that unironically.
It’s NOT about him! It’s a METAPHOR! Erdogan is a living example of what happens when you follow something blindly without rationality while actively discarding it. It could be Erdogan, or it could be Trump or Netanyahu for all I care.
I can’t believe you could possibly have a PhD. The “doctor of philosophy” used to mean something. Jesus Christ.
I am going to ignore all the INSULTS YOU MADE in all your posts to A WIDE RANGE of people because I love the Zcash community, and I want to keep it clean.
Please DO NOT name-drop the important political figures on the forum.
Zcash CHOOSES to have a grant to support projects that will ADD VALUES to the community. Why? Because it is a good philosophy and they want to expand it. I love Zcash, I want to help, and this is why I am applying to ZCG.
You literally just said the people who YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND are crazy. Being an Indian doesn’t give you a free pass. I will tell you this, because you think they are crazy, they are ACTUALLY VERY SMART FELLOWS. They know what’s best for them; they don’t need your “guidance” to make them “more rational.”
There. You have done it. I just have to apologise for “name dropping” the important Turkic leader [REDACTED] because clearly you could serve as a better subject for the same exact metaphors, and I failed to see it.
I am truly sorry.
HE IS LYING @aryaethn @Batuhan. He says Edorgan and his followers are without reason and frames it on me. I demand a ban for @strahncryptography for misinformation @ZCG
You should be. I cherish the forum, unlike you, who are using it as a personal show stage.
I think these kinds of fights with this type of language cannot help anyone in this forum, and especially cannot help Zcash ecosystem.
I prefer not to middle in this conversation, unless I can bring a value to the Zcash ecosystem about the subject.
I am literally a nobody in ZCG and Zcash ecosystem, now. However, my “personal” opinion is that these types of research are of no value for the Zcash community, and if this is something of your interest, you should be looking for funds elsewhere, or do it on your own.
But, hey, that’s only my opinion, and may be because I “personally” don’t find value in the whole social sciences (if it can be called science).
I wish you all the best, and thank you for including me in your conversation.
Happy to see your point MOVE from “the logic is weird” to “why Zcash? What is your value”
SILENT MAJORITY
Satoshi is not only a geek but ALSO a philosopher; that’s what makes BTC great. There was no crypto market before Satoshi, and boom, we have one. His philosophy RESONATED with something, which he knew by SOCIAL RESEARCH.
I think the community should fund anyone who is doing social science studies and add value to it. Because SS is a STATECRAFT. You will easily find social science in HARD science research with over 30k in funding. Because VERY LITTLE people can understand both at the same time. I charge less because 1) I LOVE ZCASH and 2) I don’t have a professor title yet. YOU WONT FIND A DEAL LIKE THIS ANYWHERE.
Excuse me for saying this, but I haven’t changed my opinion at all. When I question the whole Social Sciences, I am actually inferring a question on your logic and point, as a sub-opinion of the whole social sciences.
I don’t intend to offend you or anything, and I am not a person you should worry about their opinion, as I already said I am a nobody in this community.
Guys, I’ve been watching this discussion with genuine surprise. Everyone has the right to express their opinions, but we all have a responsibility to do so respectfully.
In my opinion, topics such as politics, religion, race, or similar sensitive issues should not be debated here. This is the official Zcash forum, and our focus should remain on Zcash.
Regardless of who is right or wrong, turning this forum into a place for political arguments is neither productive nor appropriate. At the end of the day, this is a project, and we are all individuals. Six months from now, some of us may no longer be here, but this project will continue.
Instead of spending our energy arguing with one another, we should focus on how we can contribute to the Zcash ecosystem and make it even better. That should be our shared goal.
