Hi everyone,

We submitted a ZCG application to add shielded Zcash to Coin Wallet.

Coin Wallet is a self-custodial multicurrency wallet (open source, MIT), launched in 2015. Keys stay on the device. We already support 23 chains including Monero. Zcash is the missing privacy coin.

What this grant is for: ship shielded ZEC as a first-class coin on web, desktop and mobile — Unified Addresses, memos, Ironwood, on-device scan/prove/sign. We will run lightwalletd ourselves, including a Tor endpoint.

Really appreciate the application — excited about the Ironwood / WebZjs work.

To help the community size the impact, could you share a few current metrics?

  1. Latest MAU and DAU for Coin Wallet overall?
  2. Rough swap / buy-sell volume you process (monthly is fine)?
  3. Do you already support Zcash today? If yes, about how many active ZEC users (or installs / wallets holding ZEC)?
  4. If this grant lands, what impact should we expect in the first 6–12 months — e.g. ZEC MAU, or anything else you measure?

No need for a novel — directional numbers are enough. Thanks!

Thanks for the interest!

  1. MAU / DAU
    MAU is in the tens of thousands in a typical month, and in some months the low hundreds of thousands. From public numbers I can share: Google Play: 590k installs https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coinspace.app
    That is above Gem, Unstoppable and ZODL, and in the same band as Edge.
    iOS: 316k downloads
    We do not track DAU.
    Traffic mix is consistent: web is the largest platform (~40%), Tor web is second, then mobile and desktop.
  2. Swap / buy-sell
    Swaps: tens of thousands of transactions per month, millions of USD, through 4 in-app providers.
    Buy/sell: smaller; 6 on-ramp/off-ramp providers.
  3. Zcash today
    No. We do not support ZEC yet.
  4. If the grant lands (6–12 months)
    A realistic target is a few thousand ZEC holders in the wallet, not a hockey stick.
    We already have a Monero base and a large Tor web audience. Those are the users who actually want a privacy coin next to the rest of their portfolio, without installing a separate app.

Thank you for reviewing our application and for the detailed response to both proposals.

Regarding the 2nd proposal - creating a Zcash lib - everything is clear. It is not a priority, since maintaining two libraries is not justified economically or technically.

Regarding this proposal, the only limitation for receiving the grant was the requested amount, since there is a $54k benchmark from Noir wallet.

Could we discuss this again, reassess the development internally with the team, and submit another grant with a proper justification? @ZCG
