[Grant Proposal] ZecBit - NFT infrastructure for Zcash Shielded Assets

The pending accounts have been approved.

We want to foster open discussions about pending grants but a million new accounts saying “sweet project bro” are not helpful for the committee to make their decision.

I have temporary placed the thread in slow mode. please try to focus on discussion that helps with the community and committees understanding of the project.

Rooting for you guys, i acknowledge your work ethic and efforts. I’m sure the community won’t pass up on this

All the vest chief

so I’ve got a few questions on debit building a ZSA-based marketplace for NFTs

  • How does ZMD-1 solve the current lack of a standardized, verifiable way for wallets to identify and display Zcash Shielded Assets (ZSAs) without relying on a trusted registry?
  • How will the open-source indexer and shielded payment infrastructure improve interoperability, transparency, and security for ZSA-based applications across the ecosystem?
  • Given that ZSA, ZIP 226/227, and atomic settlement via ZIP 228 are still in draft/testnet stages, what risks or changes could affect ZMD-1’s adoption and the proposed infrastructure’s transition to mainnet?

Thanks for your detailed answer, this clarifies the architecture a lot

I especially like the idea of making the success metrics independent of ZecBit itself. It makes this proposal much more interesting as an infrastructure and not just a marketplace

One point I still emphasize: do you plan to consider external adoption milestones as a hard acceptance criterion for the grant, rather than just a success metric?

For example, a standalone wallet/tool implementing ZMD-1 and a third-party version of the indexer would be strong evidence that the standard is indeed becoming an ecosystem infrastructure.

If these integrations don’t happen, would you consider this milestone incomplete?

I think this distinction could make the proposal significantly stronger

Awesome initiative… ZEC needed more eyes and investors and ZecBit is just doing that

I hope you get all the support you need. Rooting for you

I support this proposal.

ZecBit already issued assets on the public ZSA testnet and shipped a working marketplace layer. The grant should fund the reusable pieces: ZMD-1, an independently runnable indexer, and shielded payment intake with an external security review.

ZIP 227 only stores a 32-byte hash. Without a shared metadata standard, wallets will fragment or get phished by fake asset names. A hash-bound spec plus a key-less indexer that anyone can re-run from issuance bundles is the public-good part.

If approved, I’d want these locked in:

ZMD-1 and the resolver library permissively licensed, no dependency on ZecBit services

Indexer acceptance = two independent operators reproduce the same public catalog from chain data

Payment tooling scoped and reviewed as sensitive code, not mixed into marketplace ops

Wallet teams reviewing ZMD-1 would be the strongest signal this is infrastructure, not just a brand grant.

Good idea Agree that collectibles are one of the few ways to turn attention into participation on Zcash.

New accounts have been joining from CT since Zecbit went viral.

I first discovered Zcash when I was reading about Edward Snowden, but I never really took the time to learn more about it. Recently, with all the hype around Zcash, privacy, and the price movement, I started paying more attention.

The more I learn about Zcash, the more excited I get to discover the ecosystem and explore the different projects building around privacy. And since I’m also an NFT lover, Zecbit naturally caught my attention.

I’m still learning and trying to understand the ecosystem better, which is why I joined the forum in the first place.

This is the kind of infrastructure Zcash needs.

The focus on verifiable metadata, wallet compatibility, and reducing asset-name phishing is especially important as ZSAs grow. The testnet milestone and the work around the indexer, minting studio, and verifier show this is already moving beyond an idea.

Excited to see where zec_bit takes this. I’m supporting early … now all I’m asking for is a WL spot. :folded_hands:

Hi Batuhan, in your opinion, does Zecbit have a strong foundation for what it aims to build?

ZMD-1 is ambitious i wanna see this experience nfts with a privacy layer.

The ZMD-1 specification and support for the full format (zmd1|<collection>|<index>|<cid>|<contentHash>) effectively address the issue of identity impersonation in wallets. I consider it essential that the resolver and the indexer be open-source and independently verifiable.

I am far from being a tech-minded person but I learned what I could when I came into blockchain space 6 years ago, and I am one of the idiots who are actually “here for the tech”. To me, web3 in the last 2-3 years has denigrated the actual use cases of blockchain tech that could change the world. Sh*tcoins, NFT grifts, prediction markets over-prevalance, and so many unscrupulous founders using web3 retail as a ‘Kickstarter’ to raise easy funds.

I tried my best to understand what you are doing here, and the quickest comparison would be Ordinals, but I feel like this would be doing a huge disservice to what you want to achieve with Shielded Assets here. I strongly believe there is strong use case for blockchain products to decentralise and self-custody things that so badly need it, like ticket sales marketplaces, digital identity, etc. and from my noob reading of your proposal, an NFT infrastructure could be a big first step towards applications like these.

Looking forward to seeing what you build, and hopefully see something that can restore my faith in the blockchain space, because I’m losing hope.

All the best sir!

This is why this proposal has caught my attention – in a blockchain space where everything being built it for one purpose, and mostly shallow purposes, what is being proposed here seems so much more, with so much potential to add so much to the protocol. Actual infrastructure and not just an application.

good read.

Fingers crossed and looking forward to how this proposal turn out!:crossed_fingers:

I support this proposal.

The gap it’s addressing — no metadata standard, no reproducible indexer for ZSAs — is real, and the team is being upfront about the limitations instead of overselling (escrow, testnet status, single-maintainer risk all stated plainly).

That kind of honesty is rare in grant threads.

Hope this gets funded :locked_with_key:

This legend deserves it. Regardless of funding he’s already giving a free mint of what’s expected to be a very hyped nft.

Proposal was really great

Have got a question

If two independent indexers can reconstruct the same ZSA catalog from the chain, could ZMD-1 eventually become more than an NFT metadata standard a trustless discovery layer where a wallet can prove not only what an asset is, but why that exact piece of metadata belongs to it without trusting any marketplace, issuer, or indexer?
