Helping a friend

Hello All! Just wondering how my friend could recover their “lost” ZEC? He’s only transacted via Zecwallet and Gemini. Now that Zecwallet is EOL we’re a little concerned that the ZEC has been lost? Here’s the transaction history. Please advise: Zcash address t1NYtEkTVWVSncFgSbevw5TQdWsrVHTeWbx

Mobile or PC? Do they have any backups/keys/seeds?

Hi they have private key, the wallet was initially on mac. But they could restore on either if necessary

I would give zkool a try:

Check out the “supported key” section

I’m not sure, all I see is a single transaction on the T-address you provided

Sorry

Looking at that output of 104 to another address with two more outputs. One is an output of 121.9 to an empty address with fairly extensive tx history and the other for 83 to an address holding over 24k zec. It’s not really surprising because they all use transparent zec and it’s non-fungible so you can crawl all of it. (Also, 3xpl is a much better UX)

To add a bit more context to this. He moved his zec back on the exchange, those are the transactions you see there. Leaving the 30~ or so zec behind for another day. He never moved that last 30 zec. When I saw this I assumed the 30 just automatically moved to a new address as change. Because isnt that what happens?

He used Zecwallet full node at the time. So there is no key phrase. Its just that one private key.

I Thought maybe if he did a sweep on ywallet he would be able to downline to the change address with the one key. Would this be a possible solution? At this point I dont see how else these funds would have been “moved”.

Prior to 4.7.0, the full node maintained a pool of keys/addresses. Whenever it needed a change address, it would pick one key from the pool, so it is not one private key.

Lists the addresses managed by this wallet by source, including those generated from randomness by this wallet, Sapling addresses generated from the legacy HD seed, imported watchonly transparent addresses, shielded addresses tracked using imported viewing keys, and addresses derived from the wallet’s mnemonic seed for releases version 4.7.0 and above.

Does this mean it basically comes down to if he can find the original wallet.dat file? Seeing as Zecwallet full node was deleted after support ended. What exactly are the options? Besides trying his luck with data recovery software? I am reading about this ZExCavator tool, does that apply/help here?

Yes, best case scenario, that would be the way to get all of the addresses in the wallet to check for funds.

ZExCavator doesn’t work for ZecWallet full node ( wallet.dat) files yet but I believe they are working on adding it. It’s currently only for ZecWallet lite.

If he does find the wallet.dat file he could use these steps to recover: Не загружается кошелёк (тема закрыта) - #14 by Shawn

Yes, you would need the wallet.dat. A single private key will only apply to a single address. On windows, the directory was C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Zcash
