**This week in privacy,** big tech pumped the brakes on facial recognition. [Amazon announced a one year moratorium](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/10/technology/amazon-facial-recognition-backlash.html?campaign_id=158&emc=edit_ot_20200611&instance_id=19307&nl=on-tech-with-shira-ovide&regi_id=93745799&segment_id=30689&te=1&user_id=ef510507195464f1d2019e4105a07cb3) on their Rekognition product and [IBM](https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/8/21284683/ibm-no-longer-general-purpose-facial-recognition-analysis-software) is halting their facial recognition program altogether. Brave [addressed a redirect issue](https://twitter.com/BrendanEich/status/1269313200127795201) in their browser. “The goal is algorithmic governance,” NYT does another deep dive on the [Chinese surveillance machine](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/08/business/china-surveillance-technology.html). [Zoom](https://www.axios.com/zoom-closes-chinese-user-account-tiananmen-square-f218fed1-69af-4bdd-aac4-7eaf67f34084.html) closed account of U.S.-based Chinese activist “to comply with local law.”

Friend of Zcash, Alejandro Machado [working on Valiu](https://www.caracaschronicles.com/2020/06/05/zelle-for-the-people/?mc_cid=9961a18f8a), a startup that allows Venezuelans to transact in dollars without a US bank account.

In crypto news, [Isaiah Jackson](https://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-black-america-economic-justice-author-isaiah-jackson) and [Robert Greenfield](https://www.coindesk.com/the-crypto-community-needs-to-stand-up-and-fight-racism) wrote powerful pieces for Coindesk on crypto, race and what needs to change. [Matt Mitchell](https://twitter.com/geminiimatt), Ford Foundation Fellow and founder of [Crypto Harlem](https://twitter.com/cryptoharlem), led a great workshop on digital security while protesting. Holmes shared his inspiration for starting [Zbay](https://twitter.com/ZbayApp/status/1270416890071040006?s=20) - it involves fighting against hacker-for-hires, misinformation and fighting for the future.
