1. Is there a minimum hashrate you should have for solo mining **if you want to mine a block more often than never**? I’m wondering if 3600 Sol/s meets the bar.

2. How do I set up a miner (like optiminer) to work with solo mining? Do I need to create my own pool first (probably running as localhost) and point optiminer at my pool?

You wilk not get anything, propably not even with 100 times that hash rate.

There is something called luck formula that will include the difficulty you can look it up

A few months ago the minimum was maybe 1 MSol/s. You should probably have 2-5 MSol/s to solo-mine right now.

bummer. I’m hoping that maybe once Zcash team revs the PoW algo we might see a bunch of asics/hashpower fall off the network at which point solo mining using my humble setup might become a less outrageous proposition.

Mining to Zcash node using a solo miner?

Pointed my miner to the local zcash node but the miner reported the connection as dead. Am I doing this right? Do I need something else other than the fully synced and functioning Zcashd node and a ZEC miner?

You will likely never find a solo block. Zcash is ASIC since 2009 and that’s the best way to mine in 2025.

I have an ASIC miner. That wasn’t the question but thanks for your advice…

Do you need a stratum proxy for your ASIC?

Refer to this and 1.11.1, though it may take a little hackery

This is an old guide for mining on testnet with s-nomp, I’m not sure how well it will work anymore but you can check it out

There may be reason too believe that this is maybe the most up to date repo with that

I’ve revamped the pipelines around mining with Zebra, but haven’t polished and pushed it yet. I’ll share it here soon.

If you’re at 3.6 kSol/s, you’re basically buying a lottery ticket.

There’s no hard “minimum,” but what matters is your share of total network hash. Zcash network hash rate is massive compared to a few kSol/s. At that level you could technically find a block… but statistically it could take years (or never). Solo only makes sense if you control a meaningful chunk of the network — otherwise variance kills you.

On setup:

You don’t _have_ to create a public pool, but you do need a fully synced Zcash node running locally if you want true solo. Your miner (Optiminer) would point to your local zcashd instance and submit block solutions directly.

Most people don’t do that because:

1. It’s more setup/maintenance.

2. Odds are terrible unless you have serious hashpower.

That’s why most small miners use pools — you trade the “full block reward” dream for consistent payouts.

If your goal is learning, solo is fine.
If your goal is steady returns, pool mining is the realistic route.
