It seems like the right approach is to be honest with users and tell them that if privacy is important to them, they absolutely shouldn’t use light wallets.

As far as I understand, they absolutely should. Would you mind elaborating?

The takeaway: to best protect your privacy you should use a public, third-party node and interact with it only over a VPN or Tor.
