We published this tweet from our Zodl X account this week. It’s a simple call to action, but in practice, extremely difficult. The digitization of everything has concentrated power into the hands of those who control the networks, and the system has become integrated in every part of our lives.
The power to see and control our data has proved insatiable, creating a parasitic cycle that consumes more of us, its hosts, as we feed it more information about us. It is eating us alive, from the inside out, our agency and our will. We grow weaker each day.
This week, Apple added age verification for UK customers to use the Internet freely, part of a much larger global push to introduce digital identification for access to services, to moderate our digital lives. And once data is collected and stored, it will be hacked, as both the EU and France recently demonstrated.
It gets worse. Digital risks are not limited to digital access restrictions or identity theft. Canada had its truckers; Germany is freezing reporters’ funds. Within the system, the money is not your own. Don’t conform, you and your children can’t eat. And forget about traveling to Hong Kong to visit family, lest you let some creep sift through your selfies, journal entries, bank accounts, and corporate IP. Control the data, and you control the food, the funds, and the flight.
We must exit this insanity. Education is important, but not enough. Access to useful services is intoxicating, and access to financial services is necessary for survival.
And so we build the alternative in which non-compromisable end-to-end encryption is built into tools that are just as easy to use, useful, and powerful as the parasitic tools used pervasively today. Starve the data, starve the parasite.
But we are running out of time.
We need to ship what matters, faster. We must shed legacy thinking, onboard more builders, and accelerate. True of ZODL, where we are building an alternative to the system where money can be used freely and without risk of censorship or seizure. It’s also true of the Zcash ecosystem, and true of all the privacy builders. If you aren’t already, use, invest in, and play with the tools everyone is building. Building privacy-protecting tech is not a zero-sum game. We have the power to innovate faster than they can control. We have the power to exit the system.
