Free Society Hack, Mumbai, 4–5 Nov: partners, mentors and judges wanted

Hey all, Sacha from WebZero here (the team behind the Free Society Hack happening Nov 4-5 in Mumbai formerly known as Hack To Dark). I wanted to make a dedicated post to serve as a call for people in the ecosystem who want to be part of it.

What it is

  • 75+ builders, in person, Mumbai
  • One day hackathon + demo day followed by a 30 day support program to guide selected teams into the ecosystem as they continue to work on their projects
  • A 2.5k USD prize pool spread between demo day prizes and post-hackathon program prizes
  • Teams / individuals are matched with an ecosystem partner and spend the next 30 days shipping an agreed public contribution with required checkins with the WebZero team

The goal is simple: the hack is where people start in Zcash. We care less about which projects survive and more about who is still contributing a month later. That only works if builders meet real projects with real things to work on - or at the very least gain the confidence to grow as valuable contributors in the ecosystem, which is where you come in.

:handshake: What we’re looking for

ZecHub and Zcash India are already on board (stoked to be collaborating with you guys @dismad and @jatinsahijwani!) and we’re looking for a few more people to help in one or more of these ways:

  • Partner: be a named contact for a builder for 30 days, agree a small milestone with them by Fri 13 Nov, and tell us at the end whether they delivered (by Fri 4 Dec). No calls or sessions to run.
  • Mentor: help builders on hack day, Wed 4 Nov, in person in Mumbai or remotely. Any hours you can give.
  • Judge: score submissions online on the night of the hack, between midnight and 10:00 AM IST on Thu 5 Nov.

You don’t need to represent a project to get involved, individual contributors are just as welcome. After all, it’s your experience in the ecosystem that we want new builders to learn from as they take their first steps.

We’ll also ask partners for one way a newcomer could get involved with their project: a good first issue, a doc, a missing resource. We’ll share these with builders before the hack, so they arrive already thinking about what they could build that would become a meaningful contribution to the ecosystem.

What you get

  • Your project is featured in the builder pack and our social posts
  • 75+ vetted builders see your project and your open problems before they start building
  • If you partner, a builder spends 30 days on something useful to you

It takes two minutes: Free Society Hack: Partner sign-up

Hey @sacha, this sounds great, and I’d love to be part of it.

I’m Anukul. I built zcash-faucet, a CLI faucet for testnet TAZ: npx zcash-faucet <address>. No signup is needed; it uses an Argon2id proof-of-work and pays 0.1 TAZ per claim. It’s working on the current NU7 testnet, so builders on hack day can get funded in one command instead of getting stuck at “where do I get TAZ?”

I can help as:

  • Partner: I’d be happy to be a named contact for a builder for the 30 days.
  • Mentor: on site on 4 Nov, mainly helping with testnet setup, wallets, getting TAZ and debugging. I’m a full-stack dev with a strong backend focus, and I also do security research (GitHub, Domino’s and others have acknowledged vulnerabilities I reported), so I can help with that side too.

Good first issues for newcomers in the faucet:

  • a low-balance alert or webhook so the faucet never runs dry
  • cTAZ support for the Crosslink feature net
  • a GitHub Action that funds a testnet address in CI

I’ll open these as labelled issues before the hack and top up the faucet so it can handle 75+ builders that day. Filling out the form now
