Let’s talk about ASIC mining

Ahhh somehow my eyes went right over that and didn’t see it the first time.

that’s one of the problems i mentioned. Someone posts fake news, next one spreads it like here in the forum (not you!), next one reads only half but again spreads it wide, and nobody cares that the only person that should it know best says it’s a scam … Than a sudden you have a rumour everybody believes because 99% didn’t bother to read it to the end see the clear scam notification! Sad but true…

Clicking into the Twitter post, a person can read the thread of tweets and see any new replies.

Why would you reach this conclusion?

For this to be a “scam” someone has to be the victim and get “scammed”. So who is the victim here?

I find it hard to believe that a company pretending to be Bitmain has scammed the government of Venezuela into publicly issuing them a mining licence.

Bitmain have tweeted that their lawyers are looking into and that they don’t have a “branch”. This may indeed be true. Perhaps its a middle-man, or some related corporate entity and ownership was accidentally revealed – which they need lawyers to fix.

  • Why should someone click on the twitter post after you allready delivered the headline, only a minority, like me, will do that. IF you wanted to be fair you should have posted what you posted and added Bitmains statement on the issue as well. At least that’s my understanding of unbiased providing information, obviously you decided ONLY to provide the anti-bitmain headlines directly help/supporting spreading a totally uncomfirmed rumour…

  • About the scam. That’s the nearest thing, to scam people into purchasing bitmain products not to deliver them.

  • About the Company pretending to be Bitmain. No idea how good your spanish language is, mine is as well very limited and i can not read/translate the whole text and got only some parts of it. Maybe there excists a translation?
From what i get ouf ot it some venezualian guy registered a company for importing these (could of course as well be mining with these!). And the different bitmain models are listed there. So i’am not sure if it’s a mining licences, or just a granteed company registration to import or import and mine.

Now, i’am living in a country in the EU, send me 5 names of whatever corporation you want and i will register for each of these a company. As an example without any problem i will register “Zcash Ltd.” in my EU country and even add mining, distributing, holding, selling, whatever you want of Zcash Currency and within 6 days i will have the company registered. Easy as that. Does that mean i’am directly affilated with Zcash? I’am a Zcash employee? Just nothing of that if i want for whatever want to register a company like that. Later you can take of course eventually some legal action to force me to change the name of the company, after some months and years eventually…

But of course, it’s a middle man, related corporation, friendly corporation, whatever that again let’s bitmain look like the evil. You even left no option for it being actually a scam, even more, you denied it allready. Fair? I doubt! Guilty from first twitter post without chance of defence… Sooooo fair, sooo decentralized, soooo democratic …

That guy totally hits the nail when he says there is a communication problem and they have no idea how to react to that. Best example, whatever they write, even himself, he is a liar, nobody checking, no proof, no evidience, no nothing, just guilty for everything… What a joke!

I completely disagree. It would be unethical to make Zcash at risk of secret ASIC just because some gpu-only miners - many of whom mine other coins based on profitability - are the loudest voices in the room. It would be unethical to undermine the many months long sapling work just to appease one group. It’s easy to criticize from one’s own conflict of interest, but if you put yourself in the shoes of a developer it becomes much more complicated (especially with testing, trusted mpc setup, etc.). Forking quickly without proper vetting of the solution is a huge risk that Zcash shouldn’t take - and they are wisely taking their time to figure things out.

My guess is that when this launches it will cost about ~3000-4000 USD.

Maybe they are loudest because 100 000 people who are GPU zcash miners will be replaced with 300 people who are ASIC miners .
By your logic why bother to organise elections …instead off 100 000 people voting in one town 300 richest in that town will vote instead off them

Mini is perfect home but that Z9 “not mini” will be perfect for Bitmain mining facility …just wait how they will skyrocket Zcash difficulty on their own.

I’ve explained before that secret ASICs aren’t really a risk. If they exist, they won’t be able to mine very much because the profitability of Equihash must be equal to the average profitability of other GPU algorithms (actually, it must be slightly greater since it consumes more power). In short, it’s impossible for ASICs to control a large amount of the network hashrate in secret.

Second, it seems likely to me (and others) that ASICs would be unable to dramatically overpower GPUs if Equihash were made to be memory harder. Tweaking the n and k parameters of Equihash could make Equihash more similar to Ethash, which as we know, is far more ASIC resistant. The ASICs that have been developed for Ethash are hardly more efficient than GPUs. Let’s let ASIC manufacturers worry about whether they can adapt to this change.

I’m ok with Zcash prioritizing Sapling and Overwinter, but it would be nice if we heard a commitment to forking to get rid of ASICs after those updates are complete.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here
After reading this forum you can see, that if something happens, it will be chain split (good old ZEC with ASIC’s, supported by zooko and GPU-friendly fork “newZEC”, supported by Foundation). Anyway, don’t wait big changes till 2018 ends and by that time, you (if you GPU miner), will leave ZEC due drastically difficulty raise.

Trying not to laugh. Did he just announce the next version just as the Mini finally gets into miner hands? It’s a 30-40K sol unit? When these hit the market things should get really interesting, for the early mini adopters as well as the GPU miners. Does this count as proof that they only sell one version when they already have the next one queued up? This is exactly what a lot of us were talking about. Hash rate arms race, you get one version, and boom, the next one is already coming, so you have to keep going just to maintain where you are at. You never get ahead…but you can certainly fall behind.

I agree, when you have something “mini”, you have something “normal” as well. But if Bitmain launch “normal” Z9 with 40Kh/s, it will be harder to resist no to fork with such numbers. They gradually prepare the network for the arrival of already developed Z9

I don’t disagree with you on this…but how many people warned this is exactly what would happen? Nobody took it seriously…and now it’s happening. Now I have to ask the next question…if the Z9 “big” exists, is there already a Z10 coming that’s 3-4X the power of Z9 “big”?

Bitmain are in the interesting position of controlling supply and also demand by pushing up difficulty. Good for them, sucks for us.

I’m not going to agree/disagree because I can’t prove that one way or another. However, Many in the forums have given historical evidence of how the company behaves and were met with less than amicable responses. Now one of those MO’s is playing out, although I’m shocked it came so quickly??? I fully expected to here confirmation on the big brother Z9 after maybe batch 3 or 4. Batch one is “just” getting to people, and Bitmain CEO Jihan Wu apparently confirms it exists and is 3-4x faster (but louder) than the mini. I have said before I considered Bitmain shrewd business people…but I don’t follow why they made this public so quickly. Everyone in pre-order on Batch 2 is going to be furious…and I don’t see how this is going to help mini sales now.

Remember…they can’t cancel the pre-order

**

requests for refund or order cancellation will not be entertained for any orders in this batch.

**

That’s taken from their order page. I just don’t get why they would move this fast.

Clarification: I don’t see how this was a good business decision on the part of Bitmain. This only seems like a giant bag of negatives.

when will asic arrive ?

Batch one has already arrived for some. Probably not much longer if you were in batch one.

Why are people so worried about a Z9 that’s

N x the hashpower of a mini
N x the power consumption of a mini
(N+eps) x the noise of a mini
(N-eps) x the price of a mini

?
It’s not much different from buying N minis…

Maybe you forgot that allready a 40k sol asic was announced by another company to be released in july …

And what makes everybody wonder about it? It’s probably the same as when you buy 1 gpu or a whole rig with 4 gpus on it, 4x more hash, 4x more price. Does it really matter if you buy 3 Minis or 1 maxi (or however you will call it). the result is the same.
Actually if the price/hash is about proportional i would go with the mini for serveral reasons.
