Migration from Orchard to Ironwood in Zcash wallets

Hi everyone!

I’m writing this just five days before Ironwood—Zcash’s new shielded pool—goes live, shifting Orchard to a withdrawal-only mode.

I understand that most wallets will support the new pool upon Ironwood’s activation. However, I also know that wallets are working on a migration process to make the transition easier for users (from Orchard to Ironwood). So far, I’ve only found information regarding Zodl and Zkool.

Zodl has published a detailed article providing context and explaining the migration process via their own interface.

Zkool has provided technical details on GitHub.

Since the wallet serves as the user’s direct link to the Zcash network, I think that—with the update just five days away—we should already be seeing educational materials designed to prepare beginner-to-intermediate users.

Could wallet developers share how they are handling this?

Hi Palmar, we are handling it this way

Once Ironwood activates, user can send funds to a shielded address (including your own) the usual way. By doing this, you’re still moving funds from Orchard to Ironwood.

While the sender and receiver stay hidden

Note — protect your IP during migration: For full privacy, turn on a network privacy tool before you migrate — we recommend NymVPN (nym.com), which routes your whole connection through the Nym mixnet.

Vizor has just released a demo from its user interface:

Although the wallets will follow a technical standard, it could be confusing for novice users since each wallet has a different interface and graphics, so these visual tutorials are very valuable.

Thank you. The suggestion about using Nym or something similar is very important. I also suggest you create a video tutorial. I always think that some users have little experience with the products, and it’s good to consider them. Zodl and Vizor have already created tutorials on how to migrate step-by-step from their own wallets.

FYI, we have made NymVPN free for the Ironwood migration! Do feel free to try it out and send us some feedback: Free NymVPN for Zcash's Ironwood migration | Nym . We can create a video tutorial for using NymVPN during Ironwood migration too, that’s a great idea @palmar

Nym is a great project. Next month we will be doing an activity with Diana (Nym ambassador in Spanish) and the Club Zcash Querétaro that I run here in Mexico (I believe Diana is requesting the resources to be able to travel to Querétaro).

Regarding your comment: Nym has been working very well so far. A tutorial would be great, as I know people who aren’t very used to using these tools but are interested; a tutorial would be very helpful for them.

How can I migrate Orchard funds from a zcashd wallet? zcashd immediately shuts down due to deprecation now

I also have a wallet export file, but that only contains Sapling keys right?

Are there other wallets that can read the zcashd wallet format?

Reminder (or ICYMI) for Windows users:

Microsoft assigns devices a global ID, that basically nullifies the use of VPNs. You may want to advise people switch to Linux as part of any how-tos/tutorials/articles.

This documentation indicates that you can still migrate your wallet.dat from Zcashd to Zallet. I hope this is useful and helps you resolve the issue.

Sovright is looking into if we can support wallet.dat imports in near future Argos release.

Solid info here. Looking forward to more wallet migration guides as Ironwood rolls out.
