RAND Report: Criminal use of Zcash and other Cryptocurrencies

Freedom is your ability to sing in the shower without restraint. It is an intimate moment shared between loved ones. Freedom is the security you feel when transacting with another person without fear you’ll be robbed. These freedoms are only possible with privacy, and these freedoms are worth protecting.

While most transactions made with virtual coins are legitimate, cryptocurrencies are also used for a wide range of illicit or criminal purposes. However, the links between Zcash and illicit or criminal activities have not been substantially studied until now.
Researchers found no evidence of widespread illicit use of Zcash, and — unlike Bitcoin — Zcash has only a minor presence on the dark web, but that may be because users engaged in illicit activities may not fully understand the Zcash operating model.
