Triptych. ECC Update.

Hi Zeeps,

The rule of three is pervasive across disciplines, including writing, software development, and mathematics. We have developed three-part storytelling, three-point sermons, and three-paneled triptychs. For those of you into Zcash deep cuts, you might even recall Bellman’s Rule of Three in The Hunting of the Snark.

Three critical elements are necessary for Unstoppable Private Money: access, privacy, and self-custody. Access is needed for acquiring ZEC or exchanging it for other coins or goods and services. Privacy is necessary for free expression and security. Self-custody is necessary for permissionless storage and private use.

Access, privacy, and self-custody must exist and be in harmony. They are part of the same story and foundational for a frictionless and permissionless user experience at scale.

ZEC is becoming Unstoppable Private Money. It’s not just because of the Zcash protocol itself. It’s through integration with DEXes like Maya through NEAR Intents. It’s through Zashi’s no-friction user experience that brings together access, privacy, and self-custody. It’s through Project Tachyon to be able to move money without limits.

“I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true.” If we deliver these three things, we will deliver Unstoppable Private Money to the world today and generations to come.

Here’s ECC’s work on the triptych this week:

Zashi

What we did:

  • Evaluating a dKiT proposal and API for Maya integration
  • Redesigned the NEAR swap and payments interfaces
  • Worked on NEAR 1Click API integration + business logic for the initial testing prototype
  • Continued work on the transaction submission over Tor due to a performance bottleneck

What’s up next:

  • Finalize the implementation of transaction submission over Tor and run another round of testing
  • NEAR 1Click API integration + business logic for the initial testing prototype
  • Finalize and commit to a UI version for the Pay with Near feature
  • Evaluate all available options for the Maya integration and plan the next steps
  • Publish an interview with Aaluxx from Maya
  • Zashi-ZecHub podcast
  • Collaboration with Zcash Brazil on Portuguese Localization in Zashi

Zcash Core

What we did:

  • Implemented the necessary zcashd changes for NU6.1 to permit the one-time lockbox disbursement at the NU6.1 upgrade and reviewed the corresponding changes that zebrad is making.
  • Published new releases of the entire librustzcash crate stack: zcash_protocol 0.5.2, zcash_address 0.8.0, zip321 0.4.0, zcash_transparent 0.3.0, zcash_primitives 0.23.0, zcash_proofs 0.23.0, zcash_keys 0.9.0, pczt 0.3.0, zcash_client_backend 0.19.0, zcash_client_sqlite 0.17.0.
  • Made changes to support the arbitrary use of Tor in the mobile wallet SDKs. This will enable wallet interactions with Near and Maya to happen over Tor. As part of this work, we released zcash-light-client-ffi 0.17.0, and this work was additionally supported by the zcash_client_backend 0.19.0 release.
  • Worked with the Zingolabs developers to coordinate our work on needed API improvements for the zaino and zewif crates.
  • Updated zcashd to secp256k1 0.29 and the current librustzcash crate releases. To make this possible, we also made new releases of the incrementalmerkletree-testing and bridgetree crates.
  • Continued testing of the migration of zcashd wallet.dat files into zallet; key migration is now feature-complete and ready for review. Additionally, we resolved an issue in the zallet sync that was causing a high load due to repeated chain data requests.

What’s up next:

  • Continued work in support of NU 6.1 and Zallet for NU7.

Check out my recent conversation with Arjun and Zooko. We cover a wide range of topics, including our different perspectives on transparent addresses.

We are finalizing the agenda and session leaders for the upcoming Z|ECC Summit. We are currently at capacity, and registrations are now closed. Joining us will be Zcashers from the ZecHub, ZCG, the Zcash Foundation, The zkAV Club, Shielded Labs, red·dev, and NEAR.

We participated in the Blockchain Association policy summit and are evaluating and providing input into the US Digital Market Structure Bill. We are also supporting the PGP & DC Privacy Summit. Tickets are now available. DM me or Paul for a code to get 50% off the ticket price.

I had a great conversation with Diego from CypherStack to get his feedback on the Zcash trajectory.

I received confirmation from Gemini that they will add unified address support (Sapling only) in the coming weeks.

ICYMI, Paul’s conversation with Gary Gensler ;).

That’s all for this week.

Tripling down,

Onward.

Great discussion. I’ve been mulling over who should get on various projects to represent Zcash and I believe Josh would be pretty good at that. I wish I would hear a little bit less theory and a lot more boots on the ground realities that Zcash helps address, or at least aims to help addressing.

Regarding the question of t-addrs, are we going to play that game for years of wondering what our dear leaders & devs believe is the right way forward, or are we going to ask stakeholders what do they want? This is getting fairly boring.
