I made a short video walking through the economic argument for why autonomous AI agents will need proof-of-work settlement with protocol-level privacy. Wanted to share it here because the implications land squarely on Zcash emerging a winner.
The core logic goes like this. A machine with zero capital can bootstrap on a PoW chain by converting raw computation into value. On PoS, it can’t even start without someone handing it tokens first. So PoW is the only permissionless on-ramp

for software that has no bank account and no human sponsor.
Once that agent starts transacting, transparent chains become a liability. Every payment on Ethereum or Solana broadcasts the agent’s supplier relationships, procurement timing, and bidding patterns to every competing algorithm watching the same ledger. In a market where millions of machines bid against each other for compute and data, that exposure is a competitive death sentence.
The video gets into why bolting ZK contracts onto a transparent L1 doesn’t solve this. Validators still see gas prices, submission timing, and routing metadata. They triangulate who submitted what regardless of payload encryption. And regulators can sanction the privacy contract specifically while the base chain keeps running. Application-layer privacy is removable by design.
Zcash is the only network in production that fuses PoW neutrality with shielded transactions at the protocol level. The anonymity set has been compounding since 2016. Selective disclosure through viewing keys lets an agent prove compliance without revealing anything to the open market. And Tachyon would give the throughput needed for thousands of shielded settlements per second.
The video also covers MEV extraction (validators front-running agent trades by reordering the mempool), why censorship on PoW costs real electricity while PoS censorship is free for large staking pools, and the $3 to $5 trillion projected market for autonomous machine transactions by 2030.
I’d be especially interested in hearing from anyone working on wallet tooling, Zaino infrastructure, or the Tachyon roadmap about what gaps still exist between where Zcash is today and where it would need to be to actually serve as the settlement layer for agentic commerce.
