What will be the future of Ywallet?

What will be the future of Ywallet after the development fund runs out?

In my opinion, Ywallet is the best Zcash wallet out there. I use it and I really like it. I get worried thinking about the end of the development fund.

Great question! Why not write a ZIP proposing that after the coming halvening, hanh will get 1% of 20% of the newly minted Zcash?

I got that number by assuming that there is a 20% Dev Fund, which the polls that I’ve seen so far have shown support for, and then saying “Why not allocate 1% of that Dev Fund to hanh!”.

That would be 0.2% of the newly created ZEC. That’s 1,312.5 ZEC per year. If the price of ZEC is $20, that’s only $26,250 per year, but maybe that would help him be able to afford to maintain his software long-term? You could ask him!

Also, then there would be an incentive for hanh to ship awesome software which causes the price of ZEC to go up to $2000 per coin. :slightly_smiling_face:

If you want to write a ZIP, there is a deadline, according to this post this Tuesday, the 2nd of June, to write something down specific enough that the community would be able to decide on it.

If you’ve never written a ZIP before, maybe start by cutting and pasting someone else’s ZIP and replacing the content with “Allocate 1% of 20% of the newly minted coins to hanh.” :slightly_smiling_face:

Even though I believe YWallet is the best wallet we have by far, and hahn is hands down the MVP around here, I don’t think allocating a slice of the dev fund for a specific person is prudent.
We could have a new category like “wallet development and improvements” that will receice this slice and it could be used to compensate hanh, maybe pacu (since it’s my understanding he does a lot of work with wallets development) and maybe others as well.
I believe doing things this way, these people would be free to work or stop working with Zcash if they desire to.
How this category would work, who would manage it and how they will receive compensantion, I don’t know, but it’s just my thoughts.

I would never make a proposal like that, if ywallet runs out, I’ll start using the Zashi wallet.

@zooko I’m happy to see you here, I really admire your work.

I don’t believe that direct funding via a % of the mining reward, indirect via a committee (Josh) or deferred lockbox (skyl) is good for the future of zcash.
Even now, we can see our latest bits of funding getting wasted.

The question literally reflect the issue of usability and continuity of shielded zec wallets.

Will Ywallet keep being developed without funding?

I do not disagree. What do you propose?

Would Ywallet users pay a fee to use the app? Just like I pay a fee to use Proton or MySudo, I’d happily pay a fee to use Ywallet.

I will try to keep it aligned with the development of other wallets.

If for instance, another wallet gets funded to implement Frost, then the thing should apply to ywallet.

YWallet is my default Zcash wallet. I hope it will stay up-to-date. It would be nice to see some integrations similar to what Zashi is planning, but I can live without it. Either way, really great job!
