Workshop: Host your own Zcash servers

(tl;dr: it’s time.)

Hey everyone.

I completely dropped the ball on this. It’s my fault! A very low point occurred in my personal life, then a very high point which consumed a lot of (positive) energy+time, and here we are.

It’s time to make this workshop really happen.

I will no longer be the bottleneck: @readymouse is a new dedicated member of our team who will be completely focused on running it.

Here’s what’s different this time:

  1. @readymouse! Our new instructor in residence will be focused on the curriculum and supporting any questions from workshop members.

  2. Workshops will be conducted in a separate forum to help us focus. No more messaging apps, it is a familiar Discourse forum. Caveat: we may not host this forum forever, it will be online as a place for questions and participation during our workshops.

  3. Zcash light wallet servers can now broadcast donation addresses! A puzzle earlier this year was how to pay out the monthly rewards to node operators securely, validating that a Zcash address is really controlled by a server operator. Now when you launch a server, you can specify a Zcash address. So, we know how to pay you!

  4. Hosh now supports tracking uptime over a 30 day period. We will use Hosh to reward server operators who have the best uptime.

  5. One more thing: We still have the donations from earlier this year which we will be disbursing to node operators. We are finalizing our budget now, but should be able to reward ANY server operator on a monthly basis that broadcasts a donation address. Not just workshop participants. Our goal is to 10x the number of Zcash light wallet servers, and to make it a lot easier to host one yourself.

I feel terrible for past missed deadlines and how rocky of a start this has been. Thank you ReadyMouse for stepping up to lead this effort!

Moderators: please lock this thread, @readymouse is moving workshop discussion over to a new thread to get a fresh start.

Thank you for your patience with us, please read the new thread for instructions on how to participate.
