Zcash Media 2023

3 posts were split to a new topic: Innovating ZCG

Hi @ZcashRabbi. This is inaccurate. The short clips consist of new and distinct content. They are not derived or extracted from the 6 long-form videos.

Similar to ZM’s previous videos, these new videos will be released under the YouTube Standard License. ZM puts the following note about reuse in the description of their videos:

“Creator Note: This video (including segments of it) is free to use by anyone for non-commercial purposes as long as: i) original source of the video is cited, ii) derivative works do not take segments out of context to change the meaning of the original video, and (iii) the music in the video is not extracted and used on a stand-alone basis or in an unrelated video.”

TL;DR: I vouched for the grant originally and I feel disappointed and hurt as many others do. Let’s all cool off a bit and do a “retro” to improve things that didn’t went so well.

I was originally very supportive of this grant. Same as @ryan.taylor I have professional experience working on AV content and I could recognize both the importance of this kind of content, its costs and all. But the when time passed and we saw no updates I thought the worst.

I can understand the feelings of @David_Heisenberg about the forums. Sometimes, it was not the most friendliest place of Internet. I have refrained to interact in the forums many times because I didn’t feel safe about it. During our my time working at ECC some co-workers were so viciously mistreated here that leadership released its employees from the responsibility of interacting in the forums. Fortunately, thanks to a TON OF WORK from moderators and ZF itself, this has improved a lot and the forums are a safer place now.

I understand @David_Heisenberg’s feelings and respect them. That being said, there is no excuse for miscommunication like the one we suffered. I use the term suffer, because it felt pretty bad to had vouched and rooted for a grant and then not hearing from them anymore. I’m hurt in my feelings because I believed in Zcash Media, I publicly said “hey the videos are good, making these is not simple” etc etc and then I felt stupid and cheated on. I understand many other very renowned Zcashers feel the same.

Although, I believe in honest mistakes, forgiveness and redemption. We are all human (well, if you are an AI and you could beat a CAPTCHA, fair enough ). My hopes are that we can all mend this up and start over.

I propose that there can be a “retro” on this grant to see what happened, what went well, what didn’t go well, what can be improved and what actions need to be taken. That’s how problems like these are dealt with in a safe and constructive way.

ps: Other grants that didn’t go well should go through this retro process too.

We must not elevate sensitivity over truth.

Our community is polite in contrast to what is out there. We must develop thick skin, better arguments and above all accountability.

I don’t understand your marketing strategy… wnen you open Youtube Zcash, there is no video, only some from 3 weeks ago with 50 views…write some other crypto for example…Jasmy

I was in Jasmy community in X… there is so much agresive marketing with X influensers and also Youtube videos the price went X5 now with bilion marketcup…
Yoy have so autentich not expensive influensers that you can create good content and marketing…
With low price… or you can pay extra some big influensers with over 500K followers…
Also Zcash is more with negative comments then positive everywhere and Jasmy made this with little money not, this big you pay for poor videos or whatever, not good at all…
Some of you there check Jasmy X and Jasmy youtube videos people… and compare with zcash that is difference and you can copy their way…

I’m not say bad for people here, only people don’t understand how zcash is dead on Youtube and X too, 0 marketing… you need some infuensers with 30 k to 100 k influensers pay 5 people for agresive content and you can see the difference… all good…

No one is obligated to put up with aggressive comments.

It is possible to be truthful and not aggressive.

Then do what Satoshi did.

No, I wouldn’t write that horrible C++ code and leave it to others. that’s wrong. :joy:

Lol that’s below the belt Pacu. Leave Satoshi alone.

I’ve tried to get this initiative going for years. Zcash has under performing marketing because nobody seems willing to do the work across all platforms (re: @dontpanicburns theory of pay-for-play). Yes, our forum is good, there seem to be some great discords, Free2Z is quite active, and Zcash has a decent twitter footprint.

But when you zoom out further to more common platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat… there is almost no heartbeat.

It is sad to think that we’ve got these dozens millions of dollars of investor (ZEC holder) based funding, and all of these boards of directors/ governance teams/ user research efforts/ c-level leaders, yet nobody had the genius idea to… “Put in work on a regular basis across all major social media platforms”

Social media attention these days is obviously trending in the direction of micro-size, mid quality (at best) boosted content happening constantly, rather than high quality, long form, sparsely created stuff. Its not the future I wish we were living in, but it is the reality of things, so we’ve got to play the game based on the rules today.

This comment isn’t aimed at ZM either, I didn’t suggest funding the new grant but I’ll make it clear here. I was a tiny minority voice in the forum a year ago. This entire forum was en masse, head over heels in love with ZM and the videos they delivered in the first grant. So what could really have been expected from ZCG? (go against obvious ecosystem sentiment? I doubt it).

I raised the risks before the grant was approved

  1. risk of cost over runs (like the first grant experienced)
  2. risk of underwhelming viewership of the contents
  3. risk of those social media handles going stagnant again for a long duration, which happened
  4. risk of scope creep/ delivery delays
  5. risk of over spending discounted ZEC, into the worst of the bear market

My concerns were the minority, most weren’t ever directly addressed, the grant was approved, and the rest is history. Like Zooko said last Zcon, most everything is about trade-offs - the trade here, was a thinly exercised due-diligence process, in exchange to let ZM keep their heads down and roll into their second major Zcash project

So for this grant, how about we deal with the fact that we’re sleeping in the bed that we made; while also having it as an informative learning lesson.

Keep in mind that these videos are only 15-20% of the cost of the original ones, so the production quality is likely lower, with less or no animation to keep expenses down.

I agree with criticizing Zcash Media for not adhering to their promised timelines and for lacking activity on Twitter or Zcash community sites. However, it’s true that they’ve accomplished remarkable feats. No one else has produced a video on Zcash that has garnered over 100,000 views.

ZCG is comprised of individuals we voted for and they made the decisions. We share responsibility as well. Rather than criticize further, let’s establish stricter regulations regarding the approval and disbursement of ZCG grants moving forward.

This is a great idea! Thank you @pacu. And, let’s do it as soon as possible. The Zcash Global Lounge is every Friday at 16h [utc] and the committee has agreed to attend this Friday - with the exception of @GGuy, because timezones. This is the ideal time and place for a retro.

@pacu Would you live to co-host the Lounge on Friday with me and we can lead a Zcash Media retro?

Their video was about Edward Snowden, it wasn’t about Zcash. The audience for the “Edward Snowden” is much bigger than Zcash’s audience has ever been.

Also, we actively teach people how not to be counted by internet machines.

Think about it.

We are cypherpunks.
We are Zcashers.
We use Tor.
We use privacy protecting browsers.
We don’t like being tracked.
YouTube views are mostly bots.

The Zk Audiovisual Club actively restreams, downloads, clips and shares the content we care about.

View  counts  don’t  count

Look at the title of the video that has over 130,000 views. This is a video about privacy and Zcash. And that video has more views than the Edward Snowden video… I respect you, but just accept the facts.

You are correct, the Snowden video was the third, and final, video on their channel. Published, 28 April 2022.

The first video, which has “Zcash Media” in the title, was published on 15 April 2022.

One week later, 22 April 2022, they released the second video, which has the most views, of the 3 videos on their channel, with 133k.

The title of their second video, as it currently is on the English youtube site is, “Bitcoin has a privacy problem. There’s a solution.”

I would argue that Bitcoin has a bigger audience than Edward Snowden, especially in the last 2 years. Plus, more bots.

Also, note that all 3 videos were released within 2 weeks.

I will suggest you examples how is in real live promotions:

  1. in December were 3-4 tweets from cryptowizz X influencer with 600k folowers, the price immediatly went up in second 3 times with big buyings, I follow Dr Profit from Swiss, this guy is correct almost one year for crypto is treinding No.1 and have big mass of followers now, you need something like Eth founder comment, price went from 22 to 24.5 in second…
  2. I live in rich town in Austria and work like shef in bookmaker, you don’t know that people come to me with 20k 30 k euros saying shef What should I bet sportbetting and casino I don’t like anymore. This are Turkey, Romanian Iraq, Yugoslovian people…

I say I have some crypto underperform 99.5 % down… when they see the chart, get excited and make accounts , how can I buy what should I do… imagine when local rich Austrian gamblers or crypto fanatics know with good marketing… I say how is in real live… I’m not marketing only investor.

So that you need some social networks marketing… local people must come in contact, there is big money in people only this know Casino and Sportbetting…

As you know, as an ambassador of South Korea, I manage an SNS group with 334 Korean members. Most of them have watched the videos created by Zcash Media and have given positive feedback on the quality of those videos.

Zcash Media’s irresponsible actions may warrant criticism, but their product was excellent.

I’m not trying to stir up controversy; I’m simply stating that their product is not intended solely for bots.

Just so you know, I’m not an unconditional advocate for Zcash Media.

I truly appreciate the work you’ve done for Zcash @AidenZ. I’ve seen some of it, through the social channels where we are connected.

Let’s connect the Zk Av Club to your community in South Korea.

I would love to collaborate with you all and I hear there are excellent related events over there!

For anyone who is curious, why we are seeing different titles for that video, I believe that the title @AidenZ sees is the original title, which youtube uses for translation when a video is published. Changes to youtube video metadata don’t always propagate through the global network.

Note to @37L : There’s a place in the settings for each video, in YouTube, where you can manually enter title, description and tags translations. This will get everywhere, and fairly quickly. I highly recommend asking a human native speaker to check the translation, if you plan on using any kind of machine to do that. And, pay the translation-editing humans, please.
