Summary: Hack, Augment, Expand, Diversify
This proposal is tracked on ZcashCommunityGrants at github.
It’s important for more people to meet and really get to know Zcashers in this period of expanding awareness. Zcash needs Real Live People to embody our distinctive vision for a future with Human Dignity.
Longer term collaborations between Zcash community members, and Zcash-Curious people from diverse backgrounds is the ideal way to share our deep ethical and technical framework.
The Edge City movement is a vibrant social phenomenon that brings diverse people together to share perspectives, create, and problem solve.
Edge City Patagonia will bring top talent from the critical Argentine crypto-space, and from around the world.
The goals of this grant are the following.
Hack, Complete ZExCavator Functionality to Recover Multi-Key Spends
ZECWallet Lite implemented a new-key per address, unique-address generation scheme. Because each key was generated in a non-standard way, and requires its own scan of the block-chain to recover funds this has resulted in difficult-to-recover ZEC in certain edge cases. It also generated invalid transactions, which ended up making a lot of funds being “misplaced”.
ZExCavator aims to provide ZEC recovery functionality, and implementing a solution for these edge cases is an ideal introduction to onboard new Zcashers because it requires an understanding of several unique zcash features (ZIP32, Diversified Addresses, funding pools, NU transaction formats, and sync architecture) being among them.
We’ll complete this new feature by the end of the Edge City, provide a valuable service to long-loyal ZODlers, and offer a context-rich entrypoint for new Zcash developers.
Augment, The Existing Zcasher Community
By supporting a strong Zcash presence for the duration of the “month long hackathon” we’ll expand awareness about Zcash and form connections with wider innovation communities. This relationship building will cultivate Zcash-awareness in a dynamic emerging culture, that’s ideally adapted to benefit from Zcash technologies. Our representatives will also be augmented and empowered by the new skills, perspectives, and technologies that emerge.
This is an investment in the capabilities of our Zcash community members.
Expand, Zcash to Support New Minds
Our hope is to recruit new developers to work on Zcash projects. We have an excellent precedent for this because two of the full-time Zcash hackers, who we hope to send to Patagonia, were themselves onboarded from an earlier Edge City, and have been contributing important developments at multiple levels of the Zcash tech stack!
In addition to covering the cost of the conference we’re requesting discretionary funding for “signing bonuses”, that will allow us to support new onboards during their learning phases.
This is an investment in attracting new dynamic skills and perspectives to the Zcash Community.
Diversify, Perspectives to See More Clearly
After Edge City Patagonia, the team intends to immediately attend DevConnect in Buenos Aires.
To reduce travel costs, we’re focusing on sending people who are already in Argentina, but we’re also bringing in some people from greater distances to strengthen our global network. This will ensure fresh insights, awareness of different problems, and better representation of the Human experience we seek to dignify.
This is an investment in diversifying our awareness into new domains, cultures, and ways of be ing.
