AMA with Dodger - post your questions here! (May 2023)

I’ve been wanting to do an AMA for a while and now seems like a really good time, so we’ve scheduled a Community Call for this Thursday (25th May) at 20:00 UTC, during which I will answer questions from the Zcash community.

Post your questions here, upvote the questions that others have posted by :heart:ing them, and I will answer the most 'd questions for at least an hour on Thursday.

You can watch live on Zoom (join using this link at the appropriate time) and we will also upload the recording to Youtube.

I’m genuinely looking forward to this! :upside_down_face:

Why haven’t you released publicly Zf’s IRS fillings yet? And what are your and your staff’s salaries at Zf?

Would you support defunding your own organization if it was warranted?

How did you hold such a position of power at ZF for so many years without understanding that the Zcash full node count was only about 150-170? That recent Arborist Call which functioned as an intervention for you and a few others on the ZF was quite humiliating.

This is particularly damning because the major ZF focus has been software related to Zcash full node deploys and sustenance.

Would you support ZCG becoming technically and financially independent from ZF if it was warranted?

With experience, what do you think of the Zcash trademark today?

Have ZF ever used devfund money directly or indirectly to promote a certain political group, or to be the voice of political activists ?

In terms of expanding support and fostering development, does the Zcash Foundation envision actively collaborating with organizations based in Asia, or do you believe it would be more beneficial for the Foundation to independently establish a presence in the region?

Zebra Nodes:
How will the foundation create an action plan to grow the usage of zebra nodes?

As the release of Zebra approaches, it’s an exciting time for the Zcash ecosystem. Could you please provide some insights into the roadmap for Zebra’s development? Additionally, considering the significance of the upcoming NU6 engineering efforts, and acknowledging that the previous NUs was predominantly led by the ECC, do you envision the Zcash Foundation taking a more prominent role in leading these NU6 efforts? This would allow the ECC to focus on other important initiatives, such as the development of their official wallet and the transition to Proof of Stake (PoS). I trust both the Foundation and the ECC, and I believe this division of responsibilities, including ZSA by QEDIT and ZSF by Shielded Labs, would be beneficial for the overall progress of the ecosystem.

Is there a formal or informal plan to transition all future node development to rust?

Is there any current or planned work for Zcash programmability happening within ZF? Can I suggest Pay-to-verification-key payments · Issue #2425 · zcash/zcash · GitHub as a start?

  1. Besides FROST and Zcashd, could you kindly elaborate on any other development projects the Zcash Foundation is currently engaged in?
  2. Could you provide information on the monthly budget allocated for development? How is this budget apportioned among different projects?
  3. FROST (Flexible Round-Optimized Schnorr Threshold Signatures) is an Internet Draft with seven implementations so far, as indicated in the repository (GitHub - cfrg/draft-irtf-cfrg-frost). How is the Zcash Foundation contributing to this effort? Could you also clarify how the ongoing budget allocated to FROST is justified?
  4. The Rust implementation of Zebrad appears to be less prevalent than Zcashd, with approximately one Zebrad node for every 50 Zcashd nodes, ref: Blockchair. What long-term strategy does the Zcash Foundation have for Zebrad? If the goal is to replace Zcashd with Zebrad, how do you anticipate facilitating a smooth transition for node operators?
  5. It is noteworthy that Bitcoin Core developers generally express reservations about alternate implementations, largely due to the risk of incorrect consensus rules, which can lead to network splits. Could you share the Zcash Foundation’s stance on this issue?
