I’m a rationalist maxi, something you should try someday.
Agreed, fighting a battle that can’t be won right now, just out of principle or frustration, might be noble but not the most practical move. The smarter path is working within the system while slowly chipping away at it, expanding grassroots initiatives that push privacy and decentralization forward.
Truth is, too few people are truly committed to privacy at this moment. If we isolate, we lose reach and influence. Staying connected gives us the chance to shift minds and grow support.
Since the beginning of this month, April 2025, ZEC’s price on Binance has been approximately 10% lower than on Coinbase and Gemini. Currently, ZEC trades at 32 USDT on Binance, 20% lower than 38 USD on Coinbase and Gemini.
Binance is harmful for Zcash.
Please see the tweet below from Binance Customer Support. Binance is currently unable to transfer ZEC out of their cold wallet due to the ongoing issue with Ledger. Over the past week, Pacu, Zooko, and I have been in close contact with Binance and Ledger to try to help resolve this issue. Pacu tested a fix last week that should allow Binance to transfer ZEC off their device, but Ledger needs to conduct additional testing and audits before releasing the update. Ledger believes that the earliest they can release the update is Thursday, April 17.
The issue with withdrawals is causing price discrepencies between exchanges. Exchanges rely on arbitrage to keep prices aligned. Since traders cannot withdraw ZEC from Binance, it disrupts the arbitrage process, which has resulted in significant price differences between exchanges.
Binance and Ledger are harmful for Zcash.
@tokidoki is harmful for Zcash.
Binance is one of the largest exchanges and Ledger the most wildly used cold wallet. What’s next, stakeholders are harmful for Zcash? Go for it.
Literally, the trouble of Binance is forcing the hand of Ledger to fix their Zcash app. This is good.
Thank you @aquietinvestor for sharing all the important and relevant details.
Looks like someone who has been attacking ECC and ZF is calling a forum member a harm for Zcash because the user calls out Ledger and Binance who has been terrible partners for Zcash?
I thought you blocked me @tokidoki? Lots of noise for such a short stint.
The frustration around Ledger and Binance is fair, understandable and I share it, however:
-
Binance has been pressured by multiple governments to sometimes do extensive KYC/AML checks. Privacy tokens such as ZEC do not make their lives easier, quite the opposite.
-
The complexity of our protocol that is also regularly updated, along with our low market cap and user base, certainly helps explain why Ledger does not have the greatest incentive to fix the Zcash app.
Now again, what is happening has the potential to accelerate fixing the Ledger Zcash app. I don’t use, nor particularly recommend, either Ledger or Binance, but I see this as a positive development.
All in all, those two companies are not inherently harmful to Zcash.
Binance launching successive delisting votes for ZEC to which it has just lost cold storage access is also odd.
Frankly, they have been poor partners.
I know people at Ledger. Nice people. But the app has been broken for a long time, they told me directly time and time again that they were building a new app for Zcash (rather than fix the issue with z->t) but it never materialized and have been unable to provide any status.
They seem somewhat motivated now, with pressure from Binance, to address the issue Binance has. Quite frankly, it shouldn’t be this hard.
Binance is historically hard to work with and elusive at a decision-maker level - much different than my experience with Gemini and Coinbase.
Update: Binance was able to use a beta version of Ledger’s app to transfer ZEC from their cold wallet to the exchange. Withdrawals are now available.
zcash funds are available for withdrawal, i managed to withdraw everything from binance. I was very disappointed with Binance, I’m thinking about closing my Binance account.
Not much point anymore in keeping funds in these surveillance gatekeepers.
If you use Binance, make sure to only use for trade and not for custody
I was a Binance user until they put Zcash “under monitoring” with a bunch of alerts that will scare users away from ZEC for years to come. Not to mention the fact that they freely market IOU under their custody on the chain they control to be the same as ZEC on Zcash. I have met countless people who buy the BSC ZEC token and thought they got the privacy guarantee of Zcash.
Binance is harmful for Zcash.
After the “a dog ate my ledger”, I present you “my centralized cloud is broken”
I agree with the principle of pushing for terms. What we should not do is reiterate the mistake of allocating precious resources to build-for-Binance. That’s a death-by-1000-cuts losing proposition. It’s better to take the loss of Binance without doubling down on wasted effort.
Better to engage with willing partners than pursue a disdainful loser.
Props to Coinbase and Gemini.
I really enjoy engaging and reasoning with you @dismad .
I like coming to the forums to read and respond to your posts.
Update: Announcement on the 16th for withdrawal suspension starting on the 17th. Yeah, Binance is great for Zcash.
