Discord wants your picture

Not sure how I feel about this, lol.

“Direct messages and servers that are not age-restricted will continue to function normally”

ZKPassport should be the way…

Not great but should not impact the main Zcash servers

KYC will be effectively required for all voice participants of Discord Stage channels, so this is not just for age-restricted servers. All images and messages will also be scanned and potentially be sent off to a third party.

  • Message Request Inbox: Direct messages from people a user may not know are routed to a separate inbox by default, and access to modify this setting is limited to age-assured adult users.

This is a clear signal that it is just a matter of time until direct messages are gated to age verified users, the same as platforms such as Bluesky.

I am exploring other messaging platforms and hope that others will do so also. ZK age verification is not a solution and will be used primarily as a gateway to onboard people onto CBDCs.

If your account is on a self hosted Bluesky instance you can simply disable that, no? source

We should move over to federated platforms. Including Bluesky or Mastodon; at least then at most we will get defederated from the main server.

Sorry, what do you mean?

ZKP age verification is just the first functionality of the EU Digital Identity Wallet to onboard people onto the apps, the plan is to expand the scope to payments, ability to travel, etc. Some of the reference apps are taking steps to actively block usage on devices with non-proprietary operating systems such as GrapheneOS: GrapheneOS support #38.

Easily authorise payments through your wallet.

Store and share key travel documents like boarding passes, and identify yourself when making hotel reservations.

It goes beyond Discord, the goal being basically to KYC the entire internet.

No digital ID, no internet access.

More correctly it is to make it impossible to legally run any community. Just in case you happen to invent a competitor.

Why not both?

I publicly bitched YEARS ago when discord was being set up for zcash-critical stuff, that it was a bad idea.

It was a bad idea then, it’s a worse idea to continue now.

Use Zulip or Matrix for chats.

Or maybe there’s other options aligned with user freedom?

Zcash is already organizing on Github which is also bad but hasn’t been entirely locked down (yet).

It depends a lot on your point of view. If it’s a critical developer’s perspective, I agree. Satoshi Nakamoto himself maintained anonymity because he knew that if Bitcoin were publicly available, it wouldn’t exist.

Now, if your point of view is community-oriented, marketing-driven growth, you’re completely wrong. Billions of people are trapped in traditional systems; bringing them into our system requires patience and being where they are.

Depends on the platform. For now, yes, age verification on Bluesky is client-side. But unclear whether this will be allowed going forward. It is time to start moving communities over to federated platforms.

Reaching people is important, but so is not stonewalling principled privacy enthusiasts.
It’s not one or the other.

I believe the key aspect is choice, like how Zcash offers both transparent and shielded. The freedom of choice, but what truly matters is the presence of Zcash everywhere!
