Obscura Labs: An independent Non- US Organisation

Today, I’m excited to formally introduce Obscura Labs, an independent non-US organization registered in Nigeria with a strategic focus on Africa and emerging markets.

Obscura Labs was created to build infrastructure, tools, and practical adoption pathways that strengthen the accessibility, utility, and long-term resilience of the Zcash ecosystem across Africa.

My journey with Zcash began years ago through community building, education, and advocacy. What started as a personal interest in privacy and financial freedom eventually grew into leading Zcash Nigeria, organizing educational initiatives, creating localized content, supporting users, and helping introduce new people to the importance of financial privacy.

Through this work, I had the opportunity to engage directly with users, students, builders, and community members across different parts of Africa. Those experiences gave me a deeper understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges facing Zcash adoption on the continent.

Over time, it became clear to me that awareness alone is not enough.

Communities need reliable infrastructure. Users need accessible tools. Developers need support. Businesses need practical ways to interact with privacy-preserving technologies. While Africa represents one of the largest opportunities for Zcash adoption globally, many of the resources needed to support that growth remain limited.

It was this realization that ultimately led me to create Obscura Labs.

There are two primary reasons why I decided to establish this organization.

First, I believe the long-term success of Zcash depends on the emergence of more independent organizations contributing to the ecosystem through infrastructure, adoption, education, and product development. A healthy ecosystem is one where people and organizations from different parts of the world can contribute independently while working toward a shared goal.

Second, I believe Africa represents one of the greatest opportunities for the expansion of privacy-preserving financial technologies. Across the continent, millions of people face challenges related to currency instability, financial exclusion, cross-border payments, and growing financial surveillance. Technologies like Zcash can help address some of these challenges, but meaningful adoption requires more than technology alone. It requires infrastructure, education, accessibility, and strong local communities.

Vision

My vision for Obscura Labs is simple:

To help make Africa one of the strongest regions for Zcash infrastructure, adoption, and ecosystem growth.

Obscura Labs aspires to become a leading contributor to Zcash infrastructure, adoption, and ecosystem growth across Africa by building practical solutions, supporting users, strengthening infrastructure, and helping create sustainable pathways for long-term adoption throughout the continent.

The organization’s work will initially focus on four strategic areas.

Infrastructure Development

Strong infrastructure is fundamental to the health and resilience of any decentralized network.

Obscura Labs will invest in operating and maintaining critical Zcash infrastructure throughout Africa, helping improve reliability, accessibility, and geographic diversity across the ecosystem. My goal is to help ensure that users, wallets, developers, and applications can access dependable infrastructure while reducing reliance on a small number of providers.

In addition to core infrastructure services, Obscura Labs intends to explore:

  • Public Mainnet RPC endpoints
  • Public Testnet RPC endpoints
  • Developer-focused APIs
  • Developer infrastructure and integration tools
  • Additional services that lower the barrier to building on and integrating with the Zcash ecosystem

By making reliable infrastructure more accessible, I hope to support a new generation of developers, applications, and services building around Zcash.

Adoption and Financial Access

For Zcash to succeed, people must be able to easily acquire, use, and transact with ZEC.

Obscura Labs will support initiatives that improve fiat access, payment integrations, merchant adoption, and the overall usability of Zcash across African markets. Particular attention will be given to solutions that reduce friction for new users and make Zcash more practical in everyday situations.

Community Growth and Awareness

Communities are the foundation of long-term adoption.

Obscura Labs will support the establishment and growth of Zcash communities across Africa through educational initiatives, university outreach, workshops, content creation, translations, ecosystem partnerships, and contributor development programs.

My goal is not simply to grow awareness, but to help plant and nurture sustainable Zcash communities throughout Africa that can educate, onboard, and support new users while creating opportunities for future builders, advocates, and contributors.

Ecosystem Collaboration

Meaningful progress requires collaboration.

Obscura Labs intends to work alongside existing organizations, developers, educators, researchers, and community leaders throughout the Zcash ecosystem to support initiatives that advance financial privacy and strengthen the network.

Current Initiatives

Although Obscura Labs is still in its early stages, work has already begun.

Current initiatives include:

  • African-based DNS Seeder infrastructure supporting network resilience and decentralization.
  • Zebra node infrastructure contributing to network accessibility and geographic diversity.
  • Lightwalletd services supporting wallet connectivity and user access.
  • Public infrastructure monitoring and status systems that improve transparency and operational visibility.
  • ZecFiat, an initiative focused on improving accessibility between ZEC and local currencies while reducing barriers to entry for users and businesses.

Together, these efforts contribute to the decentralization, resilience, accessibility, and long-term growth of the Zcash ecosystem while helping establish critical infrastructure capacity within Africa.

As the organization grows, I intend to gradually build a small team of part-time contributors with expertise across infrastructure, product development, education, community growth, and ecosystem support. My goal is to build an organization that delivers meaningful impact while remaining focused, efficient, and sustainable.

Building the Organization

Obscura Labs is still in the early stages of its journey.

I am currently working to secure the resources needed to support the organization’s long-term mission while also engaging experienced professionals, industry experts, and ecosystem contributors who can provide strategic guidance and potentially serve as board members and advisors.

My objective is to establish a strong foundation with the governance, expertise, and operational capacity necessary to support sustainable growth and meaningful contributions to the Zcash ecosystem for years to come.

Funding

At launch, Obscura Labs will be supported primarily through donations, partnerships, and other ecosystem-aligned funding opportunities.

I am currently working to secure the initial funding needed to establish a strong operational foundation for the organization. These resources will support infrastructure development, product initiatives, community growth efforts, and the recruitment of talented contributors who can help execute the mission.

Over time, my goal is to build a sustainable organization that consistently delivers measurable value to the Zcash ecosystem through infrastructure, adoption initiatives, ecosystem support, and strategic partnerships across Africa.

Conclusion

Starting an organization from the ground up is both exciting and challenging. There will undoubtedly be lessons to learn, mistakes to make, and obstacles to overcome along the way. I ask for your patience and support as Obscura Labs continues to take shape.

My hope is that Obscura Labs becomes a lasting contributor to the Zcash ecosystem, helping expand access to privacy-preserving financial technology, strengthening infrastructure across Africa, and supporting the growth of vibrant communities throughout the continent.

I would also like to express my gratitude to @aquietinvestor and the team at Shielded Labs for the encouragement, openness, and willingness to share insights from his own experience building an independent Zcash-focused organization. The support and example helped reinforce my belief that strong, independent organizations can play an important role in advancing the resilience, accessibility, and long-term success of the Zcash ecosystem.

I look forward to sharing updates, collaborating with community members, and working alongside others who believe that financial privacy should be accessible to everyone.

Interesting idea, I hope this new organization helps other teams have node access and resources in Africa. Have you reached out to other teams? I’m pretty plugged in and had no idea this was happening !

Congratulations to @lisa001 on the launch of Obscura Labs!

I’ve been following Chidi’s work for several years and have been impressed by his contributions to the community. He first served as the Nigerian Ambassador for ZCG’s Global Ambassador Program and now leads Zcash Nigeria while also serving as the community note-taker for the Arborist calls. It’s great to see him take the next step and build an independent organization focused on infrastructure and adoption across Africa.

Wishing Chidi and the team the very best. I look forward to all the great things Obscura Labs will accomplish in the years ahead!
