Trezor support for Zcash shielded transactions

Ledger and Trezor are the best HW platforms though. Most tested and reliable in general…

yes, in general but not for Zcash. the companies just don’t care about Zcash.

Bitcoin maximalism is a strategic mistake for doing business.

No, seriously it amazes me. I was a big Trezor fan, and at least 20 people bought a model T on my advice. But they have a weird way of doing business. Not even talking about Zcash, Trezor just refused to ship hardware wallets to Russia because of their wrong beliefs, as if cryptocurrency users are the biggest fans of authoritarian regimes. Who did they penalize? Themselves.

Hello Trezor Team!!

Long time we haven’t seen you around, but love your new device and happy to buy a few… as soon as you support shielded ZEC! Come on it’s time!!

@pacu and I had a productive call with Trezor this morning. They plan to revisit their incomplete grant and move forward with adding Orchard support for Trezor users. We expect to hear more from them in about a week atfter they discuss internal resource allocation. We’ll share an update as soon as we have more information.

Purchased with their promise, maybe they will follow through.

At this point I don’t have respect for trezor, after completely ghosting us and running off with the money, now price is up they want another crack at the treasury.

I get the frustration @zkcroc , many do I’m sure. I think Trezor are a bit on the side of Bitcoin maximalists. I do respect that coming from this OG company, for historical reasons. That’s probably why they didn’t pay much attention to other ecosystems such as Zcash. But they are good people, rational too. I’m sure it doesn’t escape them that supporting Zcash is starting to make sense economically, but also I’m pretty sure the Zcash values are closely aligned with theirs.

Finally, as a current Trezor user and for many years, I can say that the quality of their Trezor suite is an order of magnitude better than Ledger Live. The former is an actual cypherpunk tool, while the latter is half spyware, half non-sense. As for Keystone, great potential but has some growing up to do, I don’t want three wallets to keep three different crypto tokens. I do want Shamir, etc.

So, having Trezor back in modern Zcash (shielded!) would just be so amazing tbh.

At the risk of stepping on a rake bc I don’t intimately know the history… but all other things being equal more adoption is better than less adoption, despite how the company (more specifically the individuals within the company) have acted in the past.

Hardware-wallet support for shielded transactions is a clear example of where Zcash infrastructure needs defined structure and expectations.

If a proposal like this came through ZCG today, the things I’d look for:

1. Direct, measurable impact on shielded usage.
Not just availability, actual increases in shielded address creation, shielded tx volume, shielded pool unlocked.

2. Milestones with deliverables.
Integration test >> public beta >> documented release >> measurable adoption. Clear steps, clear timing.

3. Explicit off-ramps if delivery stalls.
Large infra grants only work when both sides are accountable on scope and pace.

Trezor adding shielded support would be a meaningful step. It just needs to be tied to outcomes, not just intentions.

Transparent pool shrinking!

In this case availability = usage

I don’t have my ZEC shielded for the simple reason I cannot do so on a HW wallet I’m comfortable with. For me that means Trezor.
