Zcash Developer Sprint x LAUTECH Blockchain Club(Report): Building the Next Generation of Privacy-Preserving Developers
Over the past few months, we’ve been exploring a fundamental question:
How do we make it easier for developers to start building on Zcash?
The answer led us to design a new educational initiative: the Zcash Developer Sprint.
Following the success of our six-week Zcash Developer Workshop, we wanted to create a shorter, more accessible program that could introduce developers to the Zcash ecosystem in just two days while still providing meaningful hands-on experience.
Today, we’re excited to share the results of the first Zcash Developer Sprint, organized in partnership with Blockchain LAUTECH.
Why a Developer Sprint?
Developer education often presents a trade-off.
Long-form programs provide depth but require significant time commitments, while introductory workshops can generate interest without giving participants enough practical experience to begin building.
The Developer Sprint was designed to bridge that gap.
In two intensive days, participants moved from learning the fundamentals of blockchain and financial privacy to interacting directly with Zcash infrastructure and building simple applications using JSON-RPC.
Our objective was simple:
Reduce the barrier to entry for developers while creating a clear pathway toward deeper engagement with the Zcash ecosystem.
Program Structure
Day One — Understanding Zcash
The first day focused on establishing a strong conceptual foundation.

By the end of the day, participants understood not only how Zcash works but also why privacy-preserving technologies are increasingly important in today’s digital economy.
Day Two — Building on Zcash
The second day shifted from theory to practice.
Participants explored the modern Zcash infrastructure, including:
This practical session gave attendees their first experience interacting directly with Zcash infrastructure and understanding how applications communicate with the network.
Mini Build Challenge
To reinforce the workshop, we concluded the Sprint with a Mini Build Challenge.
Rather than ending with lectures alone, participants were challenged to build a simple application using what they had learned over the two days.
Project Showcase
One of the primary objectives of the Developer Sprint was to move participants from theory to practical application within two days.
By the end of the Sprint, participants had built a variety of prototype applications demonstrating their understanding of Zcash infrastructure, RPC usage, and privacy-preserving application design.

The highlight of the Sprint was seeing participants transform newly acquired knowledge into working prototypes in just two days. Rather than focusing solely on lectures, the Mini Build Challenge encouraged every participant to ship something tangible, reinforcing our “Build. Learn. Ship.” philosophy.

Turnstile

Overview
Turnstile is an interactive Ironwood (NU6.3) Drain Monitor & Migration Assistant built to demonstrate end-to-end ZEC migrations out of the sealed Orchard pool. Operating entirely client-side via in-browser testnet wallets (WebZjs) communicating with a Zallet and zebrad backend node setup, the application visually guides users through generating shielded seed phrases, querying pool balances on-chain, and executing shielded transactions to complete pool migrations.

Overview
Z Tips is a lightweight peer-to-peer tipping application designed to make sending ZEC quick and intuitive. The project highlights how simple user experiences can encourage everyday cryptocurrency usage.

An alternative implementation of a tipping platform focused on simplifying ZEC transfers. The application demonstrates different design approaches for enabling micro-payments within the Zcash ecosystem.
Z-Escrow

Z-Escrow explores the concept of privacy-preserving escrow services built on Zcash. The project investigates how trust-minimized payment workflows could be implemented for peer-to-peer transactions.

This repository represents participant’s exploration of Zcash development, showcasing their implementation and serving as a foundation for future contributions to the ecosystem.
Evaluation Process
To ensure fairness and transparency, all submissions were evaluated using a standardized judging rubric covering both technical implementation and user experience.
Projects were scored across the following criteria:
- Functionality — Does the application work as intended?
- Technical Implementation(RPC Usage) — Quality of the codebase and use of Zcash technologies.
- Innovation & Creativity — Originality of the idea and approach.
- User Experience (UX/UI) — Ease of use, design, and accessibility.
- Practical Impact — Potential usefulness within the Zcash ecosystem.
- Presentation — Clarity of the demonstration and ReadMe documentation.
The judging process rewarded not only polished interfaces but also sound engineering decisions, effective use of RPC, and thoughtful application of privacy-preserving principles.

After reviewing all submissions using the evaluation rubric, the judges selected the following projects:
1st Place: Turnstile — @Lycantho
A clean implementation demonstrating practical application of concepts learned during the Sprint.
2nd Place: Z Tips — @0xskinny
A lightweight tipping application showcasing Zcash’s potential for peer-to-peer payments.
3rd Place: Z-Escrow — @Rampop#6699
An escrow prototype exploring privacy-preserving transaction workflows.

Outcomes
The Sprint demonstrated that a condensed, hands-on learning format can effectively introduce developers to the Zcash ecosystem.
