ZF Engineering Update: 2025 Sprint 5 & 6 (Mar 3 - Mar 28)

Hi everyone,

This is the Zcash Foundation’s Engineering update for Sprint 5 (March 3rd - March 14th) and Sprint 6 (March 17th - March 28th) of 2025

Sprint 5 kicked off with ZconVI and the team was engaged both in and behind the scenes, participating in the Zcash Foundation’s Engineering update and the as well as helping to moderate sessions and provide session timestamps and resources.

During the remainder of the sprint 5, the Zebra team looked into an issue Zingolabs have been experiencing when syncing coinbase spend. This issue was fixed during sprint 6 when the team got together with Zingolabs engineers in Sofia, Bulgaria during the Zcash Dev Summit. We also worked on adding the size field to the getblock RPC method response, at verbosity level 2. Finally, we worked on adding a number of fields requested by Zechub to the getrawtransaction verbose response and worked on restoring the internal miner for testnet and regtest to Zebra.

During Sprint 6, the Engineering team travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria for a team retreat and the Zcash Dev Summit as well as a number of cryptography conferences happening there, including Real World Crypto.

On FROST, the team continued to address findings from the security audit of the frost client and server, frostd.

On devops we fixed an issue that was incorrectly preventing tests from passing and have been hindering our ability to merge work to our main branch.

Thank you for reading!

A remarkable amount of progress is being made. Thank you to everyone at ZF, ECC, Shielded Labs, Qedit, Zingolabs, and Pacu Corporation for your hard work!

It was amazing meeting many of you in person last week. Things are happening!

Since they are very humble, I’ll post it myself.

This happened during Real World Crypto 2025

FROST was portrayed as the State-of-the-art (that means the most advanced something has gotten to until that moment in time) technology for Schnorr Threshold Signatures.

Congratulations!

EDIT: Real World Crypto is THE conference for Cryptography being deployed and used in real-life applications. Zcash was mentioned many times but FROST was the most notable one. The most important cryptography scientists are part of the editorial committee of RWC, so this is no coincidence. They considered that a session about advancing FROST DKG further was above many other talk submissions they’ve received.
