Allow “special exception” to the Orchard codebase for the Monero Project

ECC asked because sethforprivacy wanted an exception and he put it on twitter. If he didnt want it, this entire thread would not have existed.

If you had spent time same amount of time in this forum or on Arborist calls as you are doing now and spent a little less time trashing zcash for engagement you would have known this for a long time. Anyone who even bothers to check on the community once is a while has known this.

Given the extreme resistance in the larger Monero community to even having tech exist that touches both Monero and Zcash, what is the probability this ever moves beyond hypothetical?

I’m beginning to agree with suggestions we table the discussion until and unless it becomes a real possibility.

Ok, at this point we are beginning to move in circles rather than forward.

  1. @sgp and @sethforprivacy have both made thier arguments as to why they feel Monero should have an exemption.

  2. The Zcash community has had many stakeholders (community members, core devs, and even the head of ZF) given thier input.

I’m not a fan of letting this thread continue to spiral downward unless the people who actually can make the change @zooko and @joshs start weighing in on the conversation, or propose a path to resolve it.

I propose a cool down period until they decide to drop by.

No, the ECC is funded by the community through the devfund. The ECC are good stewarts here, sorry your narrative failed.

@sethforprivacy that’s wonderful! I’m very glad that everything has been successfully resolved. The topic can be closed.

You all are welcome to table it if that is how the process works.

I was hoping to get clarity here on if we could even get an exception before pursuing any further paths down this route, but seems the lack of clarity around even the exception process has made that difficult.

An exception would allow us to further explore utilizing something like Halo 2/Orchard, but if it’s not granted it’s going to be much easier to just assume that path will not happen anyways and simply explore a rewrite from scratch in the future if we decide to go the trustless zk-SNARKs route.

I would urge you to lock it premanently.

Fine by me, not much productive discussion happening at this point anyways

look forward to seeing any future decisions on the matter.

No. @sethforprivacy asked @str4d on twitter. Do you need me to take a screenshot and post it here? Or will you retract on your own?

I was told to ask @zooko and @joshs on Twitter for details on an exception, who then asked me to post here instead.

That much is clear and apparent on both Twitter and the email @sgp posted.

Hey @Shawn @tokidoki what are you waiting for guys ?

What? That is a thread by someone else that is a counter-argument to my own thoughts on potentially exploring zk-SNARKs in Monero.

Do you not want the Monero community to discuss this at all? That has nothing to do with this exception request.

So the answer No. @sgp wont retract. And @sethforprivacy wont admit… so here it is. https://twitter.com/sethforprivacy/status/1519325378464075776?t=rVdlB_ynVV5NuEJoy_lgGw&s=19

His point was that you are wasting our time since you aren’t authorised by the community to make any requests, and when pressed, deny you are making any.

What is this supposed to prove? I was then directed to Zooko/Josh, who then directed me here.

Agree. @ all the reps from the Monero community are fine with a temporary close of this thread.

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful feedback.

I’m closing it until I hear something from the key people at ECC that can chart a way forward with this conversation.

@zooko @joshs please contact me when you are ready to respond and I will reopen the thread.

Yep. Thats right. @sgp is wrong. You initiated the conversation. You asked for the exception. Just want to lay the fact down. For posterity.
