Announcing Ycash, The First "Friendly Fork" of the Zcash Blockchain

I have to thank the Ycash project here, especially @hloo, who’s done a great job testing for bugs and issues, and contributing bug fixes back to ZecWallet.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t jokingly think to myself on the other thread that phoenetics was the real reason

Since we’re doing polls, and I’ve done some font test for the Ycash logo, here it is! https://imgur.com/a/9A6K8DF.

Not sure what @hloo plans are for the logo – I believe he said that the Y- deaf sign will be kept as a basis for the emblem, but for a proper logo we need an emblem + a sign anyway.

The look and feel of each font being very diverse, choosing the right one is as important as selecting an emblem for the graphic identity of the brand… So I’m curious what you guys think about these and which one would be you favourite, if any!

PS: you can download the image from imgur to see it full screen

12 - clean an simple.
16 - visually appealing to me
19 - Again, it is the A I like I think.
1 - good all rounder.

In that order

They look really nice.

I like 18, timeslike but more visible than 8 (I like times and ariel, also courier)

@mistfpga @Autotunafish Thanks for your feedback guys! Mostly agree with you.

1, 6, 16, 19 Have personality, my preference between those four is in this order.

2, 10, 15 I kinda like the inline effect on those fonts. The Y character looks really nice in 10 and 15, maybe something that can be worked with.

4, 12 are ok but they lack character.

18 is not bad and better than 8 indeed @Autotunafish

Nice work. I closed the poll. Its strange how people are normal in the ycash community, but not so much in zed-cash

Not ‘completely normal’… seems there are a couple of ‘YEEKers’

Hello folks!

Finally had some time to go on with my tests on the Ycash fonts, so here it is: https://imgur.com/a/S7UUaxl (HD pic, better to dl it so you can zoom in, may take a few seconds for the fonts to be de-pixellated).

I used a selection of fonts following your feedback and the ones I personally liked the most. Used different colours and backgrounds this time to have a clearer view of the rendering.

Fonts info:
1 - Moby
2 - Gravesend Sans (Inline)
4 - Gravesend Sans (Medium)
6 - Kallisto
15 - Arya Triple
16 - Ethnocentric
18 - Acme Gothic Wide

Merry Christmas to all! :christmas_tree: :santa: :sparkles: :confetti_ball:

Why does Ycash retain Zcash’s genesis block?

Because Ycash is a chain fork of Zcash. The fork occurred at block height 570,000, so all blocks before that are shared with Zcash (including the genesis block).

A little Twitter fun on halving…

At the point in time that Zcash activated Blossom at block height 653,600, the two chains were less than two minutes apart:

https://yec.zcha.in/blocks/653600 (Dec 11th, 13:48:21)
https://explorer.zcha.in/blocks/653600 (Dec 11th 13:50:05)

Even though nearly five months had past since the fork, it was still that close! Impressive performance by the difficulty adjustment algorithm!

At the time of this post, Ycash is at block height 707,630 (March 14th, 23:16:46). So 54,030 blocks since block height 653,600. Given the new Blossom block spacing target, the equivalent Zcash block height would be block height 761,660 (March 14th, 21:09:10).

So Zcash is now a little over 2 hours ahead of Ycash en route to the halvings.

Amazed its that close after five months - different algo, different miners (probably), so many things.

I’m testing some pool code & could use a little help from any Ycash miners who lurk here

All I need are a few minutes connection time from various mining clients to confirm what works and what doesn’t. I only have old Nvidia hardware so there are things I can’t try.

PM me for connection details.

EDIT: Tested & works on these clients :-

  • miniz (v1.6w)
  • GMiner (v2.28)
  • lolMiner (v0.8.4)

EDIT: Five blocks in 24 hours, it works
