Coinholder Poll - NSM

As I previously mentioned, I’m working with Hanh to organize a coinholder poll to gauge sentiment on the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM). Similar to previous polls, coinholders will need to move their ZEC into the Orchard pool during a designated registration window. **For this poll, the registration window runs from Block 2,700,000, which occurred on October 31, 2024, to Block 2,731,300, which will occur around 17:00 UTC on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 to Block 2,734,280, which will occur around 08:00 UTC on Saturday, November 30.

Please note: YWallet is currently the only wallet that supports coinholder voting.

Once you’ve registered your coins and the registration deadline has passed, you’ll be able to proceed to the next step and cast your petition. I’ll share instructions for that early next week, along with the specific question that will be asked.

Below are step-by-step instructions that Zooko provided in July for how to register your coins.

Update from Nov 30: The coinholder poll is open. Coinholders can voice their support or opposition to including the NSM in NU7. This poll will be open until block 2,743,918 which will occur around 17:00 UTC on December 8. The results will be released after the poll closes.

The URL for the vote is: https://vote.zcash-infra.com/nsm-nu7

The question got cut off in the app, but should read, “Do you support including the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM) in Network Upgrade 7 (NU7)?

Reminder: To participate in the coinholder poll about the NSM, please ensure your coins are in the Orchard pool by the registration deadline, Block 2,731,300, which is expected around 17:00 UTC on Wednesday, November 27. Currently, YWallet is the only wallet that supports coinholder voting.

@dismad’s post above demonstrates how to perform a pool transfer. If your coins were in the Orchard pool before the registration period started (i.e. prior to Block 2,700,000 on Oct 31), you still need to perform an Orchard-to-Orchard pool transfer to refresh your notes.

If you have any questions or encounter any issues, feel free to reply to this thread or send me a DM.

is it serious this time? or if somebodies friend with 300k coins accidentally forgets… will a prominent zcasher be able to unilaterally force a repoll?

I don’t see any reason why we’d have to re-poll. It should be one and done unless a different question needs to be assessed.

Update: Over the past few days, several Ledger users have informed me that they want to participate in the coinholder vote, but are unable to transfer their ZEC to YWallet. This issue stems from Ledger not updating the consensus branch ID following the activation of NU6, as documented in this thread.

Given these circumstances, I have decided to extend the eligibility window from Block 2,731,300 to Block 2,734,280, which will occur around 08:00 UTC on Saturday, November 30, to provide Ledger more time to resolve this issue so more users can participate. I have also reached out to Charles Guillemet, the CTO of Ledger, and asked him to urgently address this issue. I will provide updates once I have more clarity on the situation.

Over the past three days, @daira, @nuttycom, and @pacu have been working with Ledger and Zondax to address the transfer issue affecting Ledger users. Despite Ledger updating the consensus branch ID for NU6, a problem persists in how TXIDs are computed.

Unfortunately, a fix is not expected until sometime next week at the earliest. As previously announced, the eligibility window for the NSM coinholder vote will close at Block 2,734,280, which should occur around 08:00am UTC tomorrow, Saturday, November 30.

I will provide an update this weekend with details on the next steps. Sorry for the inconvenience to Ledger users.

On this topic it says that registration started on Block 2700000 but on Ywallet it indicates Registration Height as block 2731300. What is the difference?

You’re talking about this, right?

We’ll have to ask @hanh about that. The original registration window was Block 2,700,000 to Block 2,731,300, but we extended it to 2,734,280.

Yes. And I don’t seem to have any voting notes for funds in Orchard before block 2731300 which was around November 27th, not sure if I did something wrong during the process.

Sorry, I misread the range. It’s updated to start at 2,700,000. You will need to click on the X to leave the previous (incorrect) vote.

Some participants have reported issues where their vote failed to submit. If this happens, click the “X” (shown in the screenshot below) and re-enter the URL. If the issue persists and you’re still unable to vote, please reply to this thread, and we’ll assist you further.

I won’t be able to vote because of the technical hurdles to qualify my ZEC, however I will make a comment here in support of putting the NSM into NU7.

It strikes me that the NSM is a critical piece of making Zcash security economics sustainable perpetually (while also improving the ZEC market tokenomics immediately), and I’m of the opinion that its design is very diligent, rational, complete, and ultimately should result in a foolproof implementation.

I also think that the lockbox disbursement mechanism is an ideal candidate for NU8, because it is largely not designed yet, and its final form will require months (if not a full year) of community debate/ refinement/ et al. It seems unreasonable to try and get the lockbox disbursement project designed and implemented into NU7, frankly speaking it seems like an impossible target on such a short timeline.

With this crypto industry bull market well underway now, Zcash will be best served by this community if we’re able to reach consensus on what’s next, vs. what sits far ahead on the roadmpap. Less confusion yields more conviction!

I’m being unable to vote.

It’s getting stuck on the activity indicator, other times the application crashes. I just got “database locked”. Shall I rescan?
