Moderation feedback

Hi, @pacu recommended to add a comment here to have the permission to make a post on the forum.

@stakehold.rs you already have the ability to post.

I have bumped your trust level so if you want to create a new topic you can do so.

Thanks. Sorry, I meant to create a topic.

I had looked into enabling this before but Discourse is depreciating the ability to have E2E DMs:

Yes, you can check or uncheck that option under your profile /users :

Thanks, all set.

I’m sorry to hear you say that. I think that outgoing.doze is very much not a troll, and is acting in good faith (albeit forcefully and abrasively at times) on behalf of an extremely important but underrepresented constituency here. It would be, IMO, extremely counterproductive to censor outgoing.doze and I’d probably turn around and leave this forum myself if something like that were to happen.

I agree. He showed up here to say what others can’t afford to say because they are bound together by respect. I don’t see this tactic as harmful to Zcash. It’s useful, even if it’s not enjoyable and painful. But it is valuable.

I don’t think this person is a troll. But I find that he comments on every thread and not necessarily on the thread’s topic but on what he wants to discuss a given point in time and that makes the forum unorganized, boring to read and difficult to track.

Staying on-topic is a basic Internet forums rule that should be respected no matter how much zec you own, how many commits you’ve merged or your organizational rank within the ecosystem.

The pity to me, is that I do find opinions of this user very valuable, but then hard to find or trace back when needed. Due to my role the forum is an input for my work. I do read and try to comment carefully and these kind of off-topic sprees make it harder to make use the forum’s value

@pacu moved to a separate thread, lmk if you want to change the title.

I very much value open moderation. Glad you are expressing those things to the community. I realize I do not make the life of @Shawn easier, I expressed the same to him directly, and I’m actually sorry for it.

It may be difficult to understand my position without being in my shoes. I’ve mentioned before that there’s a battle going on, and it’s very asymmetric. The people in power currently can double-vote, not be held to any kind of decent governance standard, and meanwhile those same people have shown no respect to the people financing all they have been able to do. At the core, that’s why I take any opportunity given to me to highlight the non-sense that I see anywhere I see it, because I kind of consider it fair at this point.

Essentially the current situation is very unhealthy, so how do we prioritize? Do we shut me up somehow, or do we just fix our governance?

Ultimately, I absolutely agree that we should make this forum a place for serene and constructive debate, but I sincerely believe it has to start with respect of all involved parties. We all have a critical role to play to the success of Zcash.

When @joshs goes off-topic nobody says a thing. If off-topic is only a problem when things expressed are brushing some feathers the wrong way, maybe something is wrong? Furthermore, why do you even raise this point? Did you see any evidence of some people being able to bypass the rules? You are kind of attacking the moderation here, hopefully you can give substance to this?

Conflicts are messy, but suppressing them is not without dangers either. I can tell you that I do great effort to respect the CoC, and it’s not easy for the reasons I’ve explained.

The following exchange between @joshs and myself is a perfect example.

He unfairly attacks Bitcoin, clearly uninformed of the work being put into that network by various entities. Is it a trap for me? I don’t believe it’s the style of @joshs but it works to the same effect nonetheless. He’s going off-topic and I should be the one to take the blame?

Another example, follow the four posts following this one:

I could find so many other examples. I should be the one taking the heat?

Let’s work together, not against each others. But it has to start with respect, and I may not be the one lacking in that regard.

You should flag the comments that you believe that are off-topic, spam, not abiding CoC, etc. It’s important that the forum is a space where everyone is safe to post their opinions without fear for retaliation or being outnumbered. I understand what you say. My name has a role and that gives me power. Power I am conscious of that’s why you might see me write and never see the post because I let posts sit and frequently delete them. I also edit my posts because of this because I don’t want to be misinterpreted.

Specifically on the post you bring up @joshs is replying to your mention of bitcoin as a reference for governance. So if it’s off-topic, then both of you were. Also I don’t think you were off-topic there.

I strongly disagree, because it unnecessarily puts the heat on @Shawn. When things are obvious (scams, etc), then sure, but here it’s a lot more subtle I believe.

Say it to everybody when you think someone does not behave as you think they should, we can all learn and improve from it. If you do this to me, I’ll have an opportunity to defend my perspective or maybe just accept that I could have done better. Would your method lead to the same type of healthy outcome?

Oh that’s lovely, asking for permission to re-use in random places.

Hi @zancas - What was the point of changing the title of this thread to “ZEverywhere C”?

Reverted the revision.

@zancas it’s not cool to randomly change others threads without their permission.

Obtaining a higher forum trust level (which allows editing others topics to be helpful) is not something that should be used because you don’t care for the topic. Abuse of the system will result in losing privileges.
