Matt Huang just told the world that Paradigm holds ZEC and is an investor in ZODL. His framing: Zcash is “a private complement to Bitcoin” — and that “long-term funding remains important as AI-driven cyber capabilities and quantum computing advance.” That’s a top-tier crypto VC publicly staking reputation on a privacy coin while the EU is drafting its ban. But here’s the line worth reading twice: he cautioned that token-based voting governance could erode trust. Two days after 2.375 million ZEC just voted with near-unanimity on NU7. The timing is either coincidence or it isn’t.
ZEC hit $1,427 today — a new all-time high, up 14.7% in 24 hours. Market cap $24.2B, ranked #9. The NU7 results, the Paradigm disclosure, the Fed hiking 25bps to 3.75-4.00%, and Grayscale’s ZCSH ETF crossing $727M AUM all converged at once. A year ago ZEC was a $40 coin that people wrote obituaries for. Now it’s top-10 and Paradigm is writing love letters. I genuinely don’t know what to do with that whiplash except sit with it.
Meanwhile, at ground level: Q3 retroactive grants coinholder polling opens today. 37 proposals. $9 million requested. That includes ZODL’s $1.95M for core protocol work, ValarGroup’s $1.2M for Ironwood, and several Zebra vulnerability bounties. This is the governance mechanism that Matt Huang just expressed skepticism about — working in real time, allocating real money, while he invests in the token that funds it. The contradiction is the feature.
The Arborist call runs at 15:00 UTC today. With thirteen days until the NU7 ship-or-cut deadline, this one matters — expect scope decisions on ZIP 248 (future-extensible transactions) and the Zebra transaction refactor (5,000+ lines replacing duplicated types). The price is doing its thing. The builders are doing theirs.
