Open Grant Proposals

  • Zingo Labs Accelerates zcashd Depreciation- Jason gave the update on this grant from the last ZCG meeting. The committee reviewed the Zingo Grant, noting several iterations.
    • Zancas has attended multiple Zcashd Deprecation and Arborist calls and has communicated with core engineers from both ECC and ZF, resulting in a project that both entities support pending formal approval.
    • ZCG voiced its strong support for the overall Zcashd Deprecation initiative; however, given the committee’s lack of technical expertise, ZCG decided to delegate the final decision to ECC and ZF, with the grant remaining open until formal approval is received.
    • This grant has been reviewed by Daira-Emma from ECC, and Pili from ZF is expected to review it soon.
      • NB: Pili confirmed she reviewed the latest revised proposal on October 1. As a result, the committee has conditionally approved the grant, pending both Pili’s and Daira-Emma’s public endorsement on the forum before official approval.
        • Reporting frequency will be monthly and categorized as protocol development for the records.
  • Zcash Global <> Zcash Brazil - This is the Q4 2024 proposal for the Zcash Brazil team. They’re asking for $12,780 for the last quarter to expand Zcash’s presence in Brazil and run the Zcash Global Discord channel. The Zcash Brazil project focuses on Zcash adoption through community outreach, educational activities, and the development of tools like Discord bot and educational materials.
    • The committee discussed this grant in their brainstorm session, and most of ZCG wants to allocate funds to ZecHub to disperse funding to community/education/ambassador initiatives. Jason reached out to Squirrel and Dismad from ZecHub to set up a meeting to discuss it further.
    • ZecHub will attend ZCG’s next brainstorm session on Friday. Jason spoke to Squirrel beforehand to explain what they wanted to cover at the meeting. Squirrel said that it would take ZecHub time to find the right way to govern the allocation of funds. He also emphasized to Jason the importance of funding Zcash Brazil and feels that ZCG may not realize the work/effort community-focused teams do.
    • Jason said that much of the activity within the Zcash community groups occurs in spaces outside the committee’s oversight, making it difficult to measure return on investment / the true value of these programs.
    • Two takeaways from Jason and Squirrel’s are:
  1. ZecHub will need time to be ready to support and set up governance / mechanics for fund allocation.

  2. ZecHub agrees with ZCG that ZecHub should be supporting community-focused types of projects as they have more insight into community needs.

  • The committee discussed ideas on how to assist in onboarding ZecHub and how they could allocate funds fairly because the DAO would not be feasible governance for grants.
  • Jason also discussed ZCG’s decision on Zcash Global En Espanol’s grant. He said that the committee should have reached out to other community groups and respected individuals, like Squirrel, who are more in tune with the various sub-communities to better understand the value of Zcash Espanol’s contributions before voting on the grant.
  • This grant will remain open until after the meeting with Squirrel on Friday.

Brainstorm Session Follow-Ups

  • Forum Reorganization - Shawn is reorganizing the forum and asked the committee if they wanted to change any groups/subcategories. Also, some members of the community said they find it hard to follow the status of grants on the forum.
    • The committee brainstormed ways to improve the visibility of active grants on the forum, with suggestions including better tagging systems for active grants.
    • The committee hopes to create a more user-friendly structure by potentially reorganizing forum subcategories to better highlight important updates and streamline navigation, especially as ZCG plans to use GitHub moving forward once under FPF.

A message I learned and saw live at HCPP24:

Projects are only as big as their community of active users.
