Didn’t see a recent thread discussing the approval of the Zcash ETF today. Greyscale ETF will begin trading August 25th under the ticker $ZCSH.
Curious to hear the communities thoughts? It certainly won’t help shielded pool adoption but might improved transparent adoption. Net good or bad for the ecosystem?
This old news probably why no one posted here. My thoughts about the ETF always like it one way how the adoption will be strong even use to trade the pair on hugosway back in the day. The perk to this I feel is good for traders who want Zcash exposure without volatility. Been watching this stock for a long time and will be one of the only few. I would buy if and when I start back buying stocks.
Yeah I idk why yahoo finance only has it listed as an OTC ticker, it does show up as NYSE ARCA when I search in my brokerage tho. Yahoo must just be outdated
Where you located? I used E trade and it was available for trade last year. I spent so much time in cosmos I miss out on entry at $3.66 good holding for a trust fund. No lie told here
Not exactly, Shawn. They will frame Zcash as a “moneymaker” and “good thing to invest in” in efforts to get said Joe to buy the ETF through their 401k, not Zcash as a currency.
A stark majority, if not almost every old Bitcoin ETF buyer has no idea wtf Bitcoin is, they were just told how good the returns were.
Further, I just realise that a majority in Bitcoin gets you nothing specific because well, it’s Bitcoin and they haven’t held a currency holder vote in ages.
But Zcash does. And the ETF is going to accumulate a LOT of ZEC… and we won’t even know about it if its shielded.
EDIT: Using some back-of-the-napkin math, the quorum used in coinholder votes is like 420,000 ZEC yes? That’s $353M. Chump f*cking change for Greyscale. They’ll accumulate that in a year. Massive 401(k)s hold billions in liquidity, and they just have to convince enough holders.
We (at least at ZODL) are not building a world for ETFs, but this does have advantages: market visibility, legitimacy, liquidity, and regulatory air cover for the dev teams.
I’ve worked with this team for a long time, including through engagement with the SEC. Good, values-aligned people. We just discussed ideas for using the management fees to benefit the project - we have some good ones that would be hugely beneficial.
I think the ETF can bring more attention to Zcash, but there is an important difference between getting price exposure and actually owning ZEC that you can use.
For anyone who becomes curious enough to try Zcash directly, Gem Wallet is one self-custodial option for holding, sending, and receiving transparent ZEC.
It doesn’t replace a shielded wallet, but it can be a simple starting point for newcomers who want to use ZEC rather than only follow its price.
I like this perspective. ETFs are inevitable and part of the path to mainstream recognition and adoption of Zcash, but they shouldn’t be the focus. The most bullish aspect for Zcash in its mission is self-custody, and I’d like to see the core teams and communities driving that forward. In the case of Bitcoin, it has been regrettable to see many bitcoiners abandon the self-custody banner to go down the path of ETFs or DATs.
