Zcash Privacy Developers Residency Maiden Edition

DAY 2 - Sept 2nd, 2026.

:zebra: ZCASH PRIVACY DEVELOPERS RESIDENCY — INDUCTION DAY

The Zcash Privacy Developers Residency Programme has officially kicked off! :rocket:

Today, our residents came together for an important Induction Session, marking the beginning of an exciting 3-week journey of learning, building, collaboration and innovation around financial privacy and the Zcash Protocol.

During the induction, residents were introduced to:

:small_blue_diamond: The vision and objectives of the Residency
:small_blue_diamond: The programme structure, schedule & expectations
:small_blue_diamond: Residency guidelines and code of conduct
:small_blue_diamond: Development tasks, team collaboration & project building
:small_blue_diamond: How residents will participate in the various technical modules
:small_blue_diamond: The role of the wider Zcash community in following, engaging and supporting the programme
:small_blue_diamond: How community participation and task/project activities will contribute to the Residency experience

This is more than a classroom programme. It is an opportunity to bring developers, builders and the wider Zcash community together to learn, experiment and build privacy-preserving solutions.

:zebra::rocket: ZCASH PRIVACY DEVELOPERS RESIDENCY — MODULE 1 COMPLETE!

:rocket: Module 1 Completed — Blockchain Fundamentals

The Zcash Privacy Developers Residency Programme has officially begun, and we are pleased to report the successful completion of Module 1: Blockchain Fundamentals. which was taken by zkSquirrel from ZecHub.

The first session was delivered in our hybrid format, with resident developers attending physically at the residency venue while other participants joined virtually. This approach allows the wider Zcash community and developers who cannot be physically present to follow the programme and participate remotely.

The session covered the fundamental concepts developers need before progressing into Zcash-specific development, including:

  • Blockchain fundamentals

  • Genesis blocks

  • Blocks, hashes and SHA-256

  • Linking blocks through previous hashes

  • Blockchain immutability

  • UTXO model

  • Wallets and transactions

  • Centralized vs. decentralized networks

  • Bitcoin vs. Zcash

  • Practical blockchain implementation

Following the presentation, residents were assigned their first development task: build a simple blockchain implementation that demonstrates how blocks are cryptographically linked together.

Developers are required to create at least three blocks, implement SHA-256 hashing, demonstrate previous-block linking, and show how modifying data changes a block’s hash.

Submissions will be made through the assigned GitHub repository and individual task branches.

The full recording is available on YouTube:

We encourage all residents and members of the wider Zcash community following the residency remotely to watch the recording and participate in the tasks where possible.

Module 1 is only the beginning.

Next, our developers will progress deeper into financial privacy, Zcash architecture, wallet development, shielded payments, Zcash SDKs and privacy-preserving application development.

We are not simply teaching developers about Zcash.

We are building developers capable of building on Zcash. :zebra::shield:

:zebra: ZCASH PRIVACY DEVELOPERS RESIDENCY — MODULE 1 TASK & CLASS RECORDING

:books: Module 1: Blockchain Fundamentals is officially underway!

Our resident developers have completed the first learning session, and Task 01 — ZDR-001: Blockchain Fundamentals has now been assigned. :rocket::man_technologist:

:hammer_and_wrench: TASK: Build a Simple Blockchain

Developers are required to build a simple blockchain program demonstrating how blocks are connected using cryptographic hashes.

The program must:

:white_check_mark: Create at least 3 blocks, including a Genesis Block
:white_check_mark: Include Index, Timestamp, Data, Previous Hash & Current Hash
:white_check_mark: Generate hashes using SHA-256
:white_check_mark: Link every block to the previous block’s hash
:white_check_mark: Modify Block 1’s data and demonstrate that its hash changes
:white_check_mark: Display the original and modified hashes to demonstrate blockchain immutability

:laptop: Languages: Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Rust, Go, Java, C#, C++, or another suitable language.

:open_book: README.md REQUIREMENTS

Developers must explain:

• What a blockchain is
• Why blocks contain the previous block’s hash
• What happens when existing block data changes
• Centralized vs decentralized networks
• One major difference between Bitcoin and Zcash
• What a UTXO is
• How to run the program

:octopus: GITHUB SUBMISSION

Repository: ZcashGH-Residency01

Each developer must work from their own branch:

task/ZDR-001-yourgithubusername

Example:

task/ZDR-001-joshdev

:prohibited: Do not push directly to main.

After completing the task:

:one: Push your branch
:two: Open a Pull Request to main
:three: PR title:

ZDR-001: Blockchain Fundamentals - @yourgithubusername

:warning: Important: Hashes must be calculated programmatically. Do not hard-code them.

:movie_camera: MISSED THE SESSION? CATCH UP!

Watch the recording, complete the task, build your solution, and submit your Pull Request. :fire:

This is more than learning blockchain theory—we are learning, building, testing and contributing to the future of financial privacy. :shield::zebra:

Residents, it’s time to build! :rocket:
