ZK-Compliance in Geopolitical Crossfire: Solving the Hormuz Privacy Dilemma

Hello, Zcash Fam!
*In light of recent reports regarding Iran charging cryptocurrency for transit through the Strait of Hormuz, I’ve written a deep dive analysing how Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP) can provide a viable technical solution to the resulting privacy and compliance dilemmas. My article, “Behind The Hormuz Gambit," explores the intersection of ZK-tech and geopolitical sovereignty.

I’d love to get your thoughts on the technical implementation and the ZK logic I’ve proposed. Here’s the link: [Behind the Hormuz Gambit: Privacy, Sovereignty, and the Dawn of ZK-Compliance | Wenjing Shi]

Looking forward to your feedback and ideas. Cheers!

Btw, some side notes to the Daily Mail article:

The Islamic Republic is demanding that shipping companies pay enormous tolls […] adding that empty tankers can pass freely.

The tolls that the Daily Mail described as “enormous” seem on par with those charged for passing the Panama canal, where - unlike in the straight - ships without cargo have to pay as well.

So far, no tankers are currently braving the transit apart from two linked to Tehran.

Many ships - although far less than usual - belonging to nonbelligerent nations have passed the straight since the start of the war.

Ah ~~ Thanks for point out. I actually read the news somewhere else, but used daily mail screenshot here .. I will see how to correct it more specifically.

Quickly going over some other articles, it seems the Daily Mail - by only mentioning Bitcoin - is leaving out some more details. Articles from several other outlets also mention the Chinese yuan and either “stablecoins” (plural) or explicitly USDT as accepted currencies.

It seems Bloomberg got the scoop, but the Financial Times did a more detailed followup that’s behind a registration wall, which several articles refer to. You may want to try and find the original text of the Strait of Hormuz Management/Control/Toll Plan that was recently passed by the Iranian parliament which seems to relate to this situation.

Bloomberg: Secret Codes and Yuan Fees Get Ships Through Iran’s Hormuz Tollbooth

Financial Times: Iran demands crypto fees for ships passing Hormuz during ceasefire

The compliance dilemma will only affect those suffering from the Stockholm syndrome.

Really appreciate for pointing out these and related articles sharing! Thanks for your attention. I was too rush to give the thoughts about ZK solution under this predicaments … ZK actually so good solution for applying on different circumstances, but pity still too little acceptance
