Wallets are the face of Zcash. Most users will never venture to the forum.
I used Zcash for years before realizing that I should pay attention here, and that too few people were participating in big governance decisions that affect my holdings.
I propose that wallet apps prominently announce upcoming governance polls, ideally by push notification, and educate people on how to participate.
We badly need more users to vote to have a more legitimate governance process.
I propose a small grant be awarded to each working wallet app to add a “Polls” or similar section to their apps in a way that is compatible with their UX.
Our people don’t realize that their voices matter, or how often big questions are being raised that would impact their ZEC holdings.
At minimum our wallets should encourage users to visit the forum regularly, especially if they hold significant assets.
Reference what other projects do, including Feather wallet’s decision to highlight ongoing crowdfunding as their primary user interface tab.
we really should have notifications about big things happening to Zcash in most shielded wallets.
maybe even ask at launch if they care about it and they could get a link to ZecHub weekly newsletter also from the wallet maybe?
but there would have to be settings to turn it off also. or maybe even optional opt in? i can see some not wanting the notifications if they already are up to date anyway with the stuff happening in the ecosysyem
Exactly. That’s one of two reasons why the poll about to happen is illegitimate. It’s like a country doing a presidential election but only informing citizens reading a paper only the elite reads; ridiculous.
The second one is obviously the fact that the outcome of the vote, whatever the vote says, is decided by ZF and ECC. Banana governance.
Absolutely! You could link to anything you like, even your own. Would you agree that enabling users of Ywallet to know and therefore potentially participate in important votes would be a positive development?
Replace elite with people who did their research; this forum isn’t hard to find, the people here are not the elites, they are the ones actually interested in the future of ZEC (whether receiving dev fund or not).
Also I don’t support this idea, wallets shuld be wallets, not newsletters. At least by default. How often should we need to poll the holders anyway? Every halving for new dev fund proposal? Every grant proprosal?
I think a push notification every January that says something like “Want Zcash to prevail? Participate in voting to guide our evolving currency.” is a nice start that does not involve linking to external domains.
(though I’d love something louder for polls, what’s currently being decided, crowdfunding opportunities, and lists of upcoming features to get excited for in each network upgrade to leverage our user base’s excitement for marketing)
Ultimately our users need to know:
Zcash is always evolving, is not a “finalized” project like Bitcoin.
Users can help guide the direction of Zcash.
User ability to use their ZEC in the future is contingent on decisions made in a governance project (new features, future deprecation of pools, etc.)
A forum exists that anyone with significant holdings should actively watch.
Most people on this forum are dev fund recipients and devs I’m tired of arguing with. I have nothing against them, but I’d like to hear other people more. I want to discuss with stakeholders and users and your suggestions could bring both those in here (or another new forum one day), which would be amazing.
my opinion on this:
i believe this might be 1 of the major problems with many privacy focused projects.
the ones participating or investing in it dont always want to be seen or go out in public to discuss these things.
they prefer to stay quiet and hidden with their holdings - which is acceptable.
(or in very small private groups)
but for that there has to be more sustainable growth for the shielded ecosystem also which is hard to get by staying silent and hidden alone.
coinholder voting done right with simple UX in most popular wallets and with notifications that educate about it even without any links might help it out.
As someone who is new to Zcash in the last six months and also discovered this forum through X, I think adding voting to wallets (for me Zashi) would be great.
I’ve also totally skipped the recent test vote and vote because I’m just not comfortable moving my coins to fresh addresses to vote. When someone figures out how I can connect my wallet, verify my shielded balance and press vote, I’m there every vote!
Thank you for signing up for the forums and making your voice heard!
ZEC is not actually required to vote today. We are experimenting with “coinholder voting” but at present, the best ways to participate are to let your opinions be known in the forum, and to join the two main groups that are polled: ZCAP and ZAC. If you are interested in usability studies there is ZURE, then there is also ZecHub which is a DAO of Zcash fans.
@fuzzyart there is actually a large disagreement in the community on this matter, I recommend you do your own research and ask questions if you are curious to understand. I disagree with much of what @emersonian has just told you. You should definitely vote with your ZEC.
I simply stated what voting is easily possible today, and encouraged them to participate regardless of whether they have ZEC. Vote with whatever you want to vote with.
