Crowdfund: GPU Miner

Now that it’s more or less established that a gpu miner is about 10X more productive than a cpu, shouldn’t the Zcash team make it their responsibility to ensure the development and release of a publically available gpu miner before launch? The Ethereum team managed to get this done, allowing small gpu miners to participate profitably from the start.

If the launch goes ahead as things stand now, mining is going to be centralised, at least in the early phase. While mining-slow-start mitigates some of the bad from this situation, it is still pretty negative optics IMO at a time when most eyes will be on the project. After-all, the Zcash team has been saying that mining decentralization was always a significant priority as they decided on their hashing algo

I do not believe it was established it was 10x more productive or even close to that from Zeropond’s test. Where did you get that number from?

I must have had this quote from @Shawn in mind: Zeropond Cloud Mining - #229 by Shawn
He did say “less than 10x”, yes, and I said “more-or-less, about”

No worries, I had the response he was replying to so I was curious if you knew the exact multiplier. I am not sure what the productivity increase is but I do not think it is quite 10. Maybe someone more enlightened may be able to correct that exact amount.

Let’s say your wish is granted and someone else shoulders all the responsibility for you, are you prepared to invest in your own personal mining farm? Because without a pool miner (the software that actually stands to make a difference to individual miners), it’s going to take a lot of hashing power to compete successfully on the network.

At least one of the Zcash team is working on a pool miner - not that I think they have any obligation to do so.

I have closed this topic because it has been replaced with an Official Miner Contest Zcash Open Source Miner Contest!
