Help noob on mining and linux

Thanks, I will try it.
But what else can I do if I have already allocated the max memory in the virtual box settings?

What you need is not (so much) memory (RAM) but disk space. What is the size of the virtual box disk you created when installing Ubuntu?

You are right, so I should still have some margin for the ROM memory.

While setting un the virtual box with ubuntu I have selected : virtual disk immage - dynamically allocated - 10 gb.

Is 10 gb not enough? Should I increase?

It appears that a 10GB disk is not enough for both Ubuntu and ZCash (the build requires a lot of space too). Perhaps you should try with 50-60 GB to be sure  In addition: dynamically allocated virtual disks do not take up (much) more space than is actually used…

I have built Zcash on a Ubuntu server (no GUI) that was installed from scratch. Currently there is 8.4GB of disk used. But that would be 1.7GB less if I didn’t also compile zminer (which comes with a complete zcash build, essentially duplicating the requirements).

But GUI probably takes a whole lot more, so 10GB might not be enough.

You can expand your VirtualBox disks without reinstalling the whole system. Instructions can be found on virtualbox.org • View topic - How to resize a Virtual Drive

Thank you very much!

I have expanded the VirtualBox disk space, converted it from dynamically allocated to fixed, but my ubuntu system still thinks that it only has 5.3 gb available for some reason…any idea?

Yeah, so the issue there is that the disk itself is bigger, but the partition - which you can think of as an allocation of useable space on the disk for the sake of argument, the bit you’ve got everything on - is the same size.

Use a partition management program (gparted was a popular GUI program last time I checked) and increase the size of the partition everything is installed on. Then you’ve got your extra space.

Or just start again from scratch with a fresh install, etc. But if you want to learn more about Linux just because, try it my way.

Restart from scratch. Partition it anew with a bigger disk space.

Go to GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD and download the ISO.Then on the Archiviazione settings click on the Vuoto, then on the disk icon in the Attributi part and choose the downloaded ISO. The next time you boot Linux it will start from this ISO, which contains the GParted partition manager. Use that to expand the partition into the unallocated space. Don’t forget to remove the ISO from the IDE controller after you have finished, or it will keep booting from the ISO.

Thank you very much for your help guys, it’s finally up and running.

Do you know if is already available any open source cpu miner to try on the testnet?

PS: is there any command to see at how many sol/s I am mining? Thanks

Does that mean I can mine with my cpu (Intel(R) Core™ i5-5300U CPU @ 2.30GHz, 2301 Mhz) as well? I have 16GB on my desktop and several cores (which i used t mine some other coins too)
