Fresh installs are taking a long time acquire the proving key and syncing is also slower than usual…

The proving key is delivered via Amazon S3 - any issues there? (I believe you can also configure to get from IPFS). Both of those issues, of course, would be affected by local internet issues.

For what it’s worth I’m not seeing anything off with my node.

you can also manually download it from my mirror at https://zcash.dl.mercerweiss.com/sprout-proving.key and put it in the correct folder

Note that if you download the proving key manually, you MUST check the hash manually. Running fetch-params.sh after the key file is already in the location where zcashd looks for it, is not sufficient to detect an incorrect hash.
