NU7 Timeline and the Dev Fund Expiration

My 2 cents.
All these features will be ready when they will be ready. We do not want massive bugs. The 20% block reward can be off for a few months. There are some cash reserves.
I would aim at 1st of December for NU7. The 6.5 idea is not great.

I think we should have a diagram for this discussion, borrowed from the ECC summit thread

Speaking for myself, I agree that we should allocate all dev funds post Nov into the lockbox, but I also think NU7 should activate on time. If the current dev fund runs out prioritizing NU7, this is a consequence of priorities. Move forward.

How would including this change delay the remaining NU7 work?

Neither is hitting delays. Listen from 44:00. Zcashd dep would be done well before April 2025. So what happened?

Hello Community,

First, thanks to all the extra hours worked and tired brains that will continue to work hard over the coming year. Grant recipient or not, the community deeply appreciate all the hard work and want to thank all of those involved .

Regarding the potential paths forward for an extension I believe the third option is to continue the current distribution of 12% lockbox and 8% ZCG.

Personally, and as a ZCG member, I’m excited and eager for the NU7 release and appreciate the massive undertaking it has been and will continue to be. I’m particularly excited to see ZSAs in the wild but am very aware there is lots of work ahead to get it in the hands of users. Tools, libraries, wallets, and more are all going to keep everyones hands full getting ZSAs into the hands of users and increasing adoption and use cases. But I’d lie if I wasn’t concerned about the impacts of a 2026 where, due to limited funding, the potential impact of ZSAs is affected.

I think the Zcash ecosystem need a deeper discussion about our priorities up until NU7 and post NU7 before we hastily choose to extend the dev fund by remove funding from the Zcash ecosystem in 2026.

(Cross posting my proposal)

I’d like to emphasize that we need to prioritize simplicity for a few years. I know that it sounds novel, but in reflecting on my approx 5 years of being tuned-in to Zcash - the writing is on the wall. Too much is dreamed of, but too little gets done in a timely fashion - timing is notably critical in the crypto industry given the known severity of boom and bust cycles. There is too much bread, and very little butter!

If ZEC holders get control of the dev fund, I’ll be standing strong behind this.

FYI, I have submitted a draft ZIP that proposes extending the current Dev Fund (i.e. continuing the current distribution of 12% lockbox and 8% ZCG) for a year…

..and expressly prohibits any disbursement of funds from the Lockbox until after Zcash Shielded Assets is active on Mainnet.
