Design Team @iogy / @Mine

This month, the entire country experienced censorship by having access to X blocked. There’s a $10,000 fine for anyone caught using a VPN to access X. Many people rely on X for work and information, and with the current situation, it seems unlikely that this censorship will continue for much longer.

While this situation persists, we have decided to use Bluesky to share the content that would have been posted on X. Once this phase is over, we will resume using X and also incorporate Bluesky into the social networks we are currently using!

We intend to rely on Zcash for this. Having their support at this time demonstrates how much the protocol values anti-censorship, privacy, and decentralized money.

VPC hosting and API Keys

Many services maintained by James Katz depends on VPC hosting and API keys.

Dizzy had a few hours of downtime, but it was quickly put back online. Other than that, no complains from users.

New topics were sync’ed on the discord global discord server.
This is done by a bot called discourse-fetch

ZcashMetro

ZecrashMetro ran flawlessly for the past month. It’s a project we’re very excited about.

Zcash Transactions Chart

James finished a work for ZecHub website dashboard, the charts are very helpfull for displaying Zcash Transaction data.

Highlights:

With the return of X in Brazil, we experienced a 20% growth last month and Discord growth last month of 5,46%.

We have provided funding for Blockaffe CBDCs Special 2 thanks to Zechub DAO → PLEASE follow x.com to get all the news about Zcash!

@Iogy, @Minevg focused on enhancing Zcash Shielded News by creating visually engaging designs for news updates, community calls, and quizzes. They crafted event visuals for Zcash’s 8th Birthday, developed a distinct style for weekly articles on Substack, and designed avatars, emojis, and a special book cover for MFZ. Additionally, they contributed to the CBDC partnership with Blockaffee by creating promotional content, both text and audio.

@james_katz work includes maintaining ZecFaucet, which has distributed over 10 ZEC across 20k claims, contributing to 12.5% of Zcash’s orchard transactions. He also upgraded Dizzy, a Discord bot for ZEC transactions, by transitioning it to Zingolib for better stability. Additionally, James won 1st place at the ZecHub hackathon, creating a zebra race betting game with features like wallet pairing and automated payouts.

@vito managed PR efforts and organized and promoted Zcash’s Weekly Calls and ecosystem digests, covering topics like ECC updates and blockchain news, and supported the Zcash 8th Birthday event, reaching 2,000 community members on Discord, partnered with ZecHub to translate and distribute Zcash Shielded News and Arborist Call summaries, managed updates and event promotions across multiple channels, enhancing engagement and community support.

@E-zec actively onboarded new users and supported Zcash Brazil across platforms like Zechub and MFZ, coordinated and hosted community events such as weekly calls, quizzes, and the Zcash birthday celebration to foster engagement.

@Cassia_0.o explored integration between Bluesky and Discord for enhanced community engagement, developed a price notification tool for Discord users, and supported James with Dizzy bot testing while balancing studies and family responsibilities.

WeeklyCalls

This season, we decided to discontinue the weekly calls because the news had become somewhat repetitive, and our audience was decreasing.

We reviewed our strategy and redesigned the format for sharing news with the community.

We now publish weekly articles on Substack under the title “Zcash Shielded News,” and we host community calls to keep everyone updated. These calls are now referred to as “Zcash Shielded calls.” In the alternating weeks, we conduct quizzes related to the topics discussed during the calls. The articles are available weekly on Substack, allowing everyone to study the material. It’s a lot of fun as we all remain in the voice room while the questions are posted in the general chat.

James Katz dev Report: Zcash Brazil

VPC hosting and API Keys

Many services maintained by James Katz depends on VPC hosting and API keys. In october a new AWS EC2.medium AWS instance was created.

All of these services payments are up to date. Currently these services are:

ZecFaucet

ZecFaucet is the community faucet maintained by James Katz and Zcash Brazil.
After more than one year of operation, ZecFaucet has distributed more than 10 $ZEC in over 20k claims!

Since ZecFaucet encourages the use of unified addresses, we decided to plot a chart of the orchard transactions ZecFaucet sent.

(Each point on the X axis represents a period of 24 hours, and the Y axis is the sum of orchard transactions in this period)

The results are incredible!
Apparently, ZecFaucet created 15829 orchard transactions since it’s birth to today. The whole Zcash blockchain, in the same range, registered a total of 126489 orchard transactions (I consider an orchard transaction any zcash transaction with a least 1 orchard action in it).
This means ZecFaucet alone was responsible for 12.5% off all orchard transactions in that range!
(Take this info with a grain of salt, if you want to double check this info, please ask for ZecFaucet’s ufvk)

Dizzy - New version development is done!

Dizzy, the discord bot for receiving, sending and tipping users with $zec went through a major upgrade!
Originally created thanks to Zcash Foundation’s Minor Grants program, Dizzy was developed using ZecWallet’s lib. Recently it was displaing a few bugs, mostly related to syncing and sending transactions. Dizzy was using a heavily modified version of zecwallet-lib, but it was getting very hard to maintain.
James was working with zingolib, and ZecFaucet was designed using it. But zingolib was very immature and we felt it was not a good idea to port dizzy to use it.
But now Zingolib is getting very stable and James finished porting the Dizzy code for using zingolib as the backend!
The code is ready but we fell like a few more testing is needed. The upgrade will be released by next week.

ZecHub Hackathon

James participated and won 1st place on the ZecHub’s hackathon!
The project was a very basic zebra race betting game, with nice features like “wallet connect” (actually wallet pairing, using the Zcash memo as verification), mempool transactions detection and automatically payout.

James don’t intend to maintain this project, since apparently there’s no demand for it right now. The game is open-source.
For the hackathon, the game was hosted under http://dlrs.com.br (http only), it’s a proof of concept, I don’t recommend playing it, but if so, play it at your own risk! And keep in mind that it can be turned off any time.

If this game generates any interest, We’d be happy to maintain it alongside all other projects.

Redesign of ZecHub Logo

I thought of a very simple solution for the ZecHub logo. The logo is used in many applications and sometimes with confusing backgrounds, which makes the current logo, even with the variations, white, black, and gray and in negative, difficult to contrast. So why not remove the central circle and make it possible to use any color? That’s what we did.
So, to keep it in line with the design, the logo can be used in any possible color, avoiding gradients and never using patterns within the logo, because the idea is to simplify, not complicate.

VPC hosting and API Keys

Many services maintained by James Katz depend on VPC hosting and API keys. Dizzy was moved to its own EC2 AWS instance, for better performance.

All of these service payments are up to date. Currently, these services are:

Dizzy - New version launched!

Dizzy, the discord bot for receiving, sending, and tipping users with $zec went through a major upgrade!
Created thanks to Zcash Foundation’s Minor Grants program, Dizzy was developed using ZecWallet’s lib.
Before Nu6 activation on the mainnet, the Dizzy bot was upgraded to work with Zingolab’s zingolib.
We had a few missed payments due to Nu6’s unexpected behavior, which was immediately solved.
Dizzy received not only improvements on the backend but on the front end as well. Now it displays only the unified address by default, making the user experience cleaner.

ZecFaucet upgrade to Nu6

ZecFaucet also was updated to work with Nu6.

Zcash Ecosystem help

This month, James also provided help to other Zcash ecosystem projects, like the Zcash Community Telegram group and ZecHub.
For the Telegram group, James helps develop and maintain a bot that aims to improve the ggroup’ssecurity against scammers.
For ZecHub, James worked on solving some issues with Transactions Charts on the dashboard page.

Zcash Paper Wallet

As far as we can tell, there is no modern, actively maintained software for generating Zcash Wallets offline, that offers support for Unified Addresses.
James aims to solve this by developing and maintaining a Zcash paper wallet written in rust using librustzcash. Currently, in early development, the software can already generate an arbitrary number of wallets, displaying their mnemonic phrases, unified full viewing key, and all derived addresses from its default diversifier. This software also has a unique feature of estimating wallet creation height.
Future work will be done to export wallets in different formats like PNG and PDF.

Overview

This month, Zcash Brazil continued steadily onboarding new users, providing full-time support for the entire community across platforms such as Zechub, MFZ, and others. Rewards were distributed for participation in activities like community calls, quizzes, and good actions, helping to incentivize engagement and foster a supportive atmosphere.

We had some new members of the community and onboarding the entire zcash system for them, in addition, we had coverage of the halving and we discussed its news with nu6 in addition to the ongoing Zashi promotion.

Community members were guided toward participating in Zechub contests, forum contests, Zealy challenges, and the Zcash birthday celebrations.

I worked on the Dizzy project during its pre-launch and post-NU6 tests and made updates with James to extract data from the Zcash blockchain.
I collaborated with Squirrel, Dismad, and Tokidoki on the Penumbra project and documented the updates for Dizzy.

Dizzy - Maintenance and support!

Since it’s upgrade, Dizzy worked flawlesly. New users started using the bot for receiving small amounts of $zec.
Support was given for the new users to start using and withdrawing their rewards to ther own Zcash addresses.

Zcash Ecossystem help

James is stablishing a good relationship with many Major Zcash contributors. Helping writing code and developing new projects.

ZecWallet lite with Nu6 + zip317

This month, James contributed to the Zcash ecossystem by creating a Zecwallet lite fork, enabling users to recover and send transactions from old wallets. The fork works with zcash Nu6 upgrade and has a simple zip317 proportional fees logic. This contribution was well received by the community.

Zcash Paper Wallet

Zcash paper wallet is a Zcash paper wallet generator. It supports Unified Addresses with many features. This month the project received many improvementes, and the first release was published.
Still a work in progress, but should be considered the first stable release.

Testing Tools

Albeit a minor and indirect contribution, James tested Hanh’s zwl-recover tool, found and reported a small inconsistency, which was promptly fixed by Hahn.
