Z9 performance and general discussion

Have you tried AwesomeMiner

Going to give it whirl when I get home later.

Thats what i use with all my asics and rigs since ever.

FYI, it’s dirt simple to clock beyond their list. Just edit the value in the html editor in chrome or firefox and click apply. If you choose an invalid frequency it just goes to the minimum frequency.

Do this at your own risk.

As a note, one of my chain boards really doesn’t like going beyond 737. the other two do. I’m done messing around tonight but I want to get each board on a different clock next if I can.

I’m running @ 750Mhz with 11/12 chips working properly with an effective hashrate of 15k+ sol/s while keeping chip temps ~ 70C or less. One chip on one of my boards doesn’t like to overclock (even as low as 625Mhz it still shows an x for ASIC status given enough time). I think I’m going to ignore it and continue mining @ 750 because the hashrate gains are worth it to me at this point during this ASIC onramp period.

I also found this interesting support information on bitmain’s S-series support site.

"The hash rate is lower than normal. There is “X” shown on the ASIC status.

Reason: The chip is damaged, which resulted in the loss of hash rate on one hash board.

Solution: If that hash board works well, you can keep it. There is no need to repair it until the hash board is totally defective."

If I drop the clock frequency back down to 500Mhz the chip mines fine, so I’m not certain it’s damaged. I’m also not certain if continuing to mine with a borked chip will have a negative impact on the rest. Guess we will see

There is a minimal chance that one of the following could help but eventually it’s worth trying:

  • switch the hashboards into different slots
  • switch the connectors to see if its not a power problem

It seems this processor doesn’t get enough electricity for some reason after it isn’t a X anymore at lower frequency. From my experience if overclocked to much the X will become more so i personally wouldn’t run it at full overclock but eventually 3 steps below max. overclock just to safe the other processors and prevent them from failing too.

I personally NEVER ever go to the max. overclock, but of course, everybodys own decision.

I would like to hear the z9 fan running on a vid.

It’s loud AF if you overclock it. It seems to have the regulation set to keep the chips at 67C or less. I set mine at 80% when Im not around it.

80db a foot or two away… closer to 90db with a meter up next to it. This is only at 4000 rpm and it has a high pitched whine to it which is the most annoying part.

is it the z9 or the apw++ thats loud for you?

It is the Z9. I can hear the APW3++ but it doesn’t whine. When it resets and the fan spins up to 100% it sounds like it is about to take off. It is fine as they are in another room and I don’t hear it unless I am close.

You don’t OC it to the max? How high are you pushing it?

I never go to the max, just a personal rule i set myself not risking too much. In the case of Z9 i’am 2 steps below max. which is a lot for me as i indeed prefer healthy oc over max. oc. I just don’t want to risk the unit for some 10 cent more per day…

Hi, feel free to try Luxor. We’re the only True PPS Pool!

True PPS is the fairest way to get paid for mining. We cover the cost of Orphans and Rejects, so you know exactly how much you should be making.

so bad luck for me then…my parents are leaving their house soon and I don’t wan’t angry neighbours. Maybe I could put the ASIC in a fridge

Quick update on my Z9… Occasionally the borked chip will just start working again and I’ll see improved hashrates at the pool (from ~15+ kh → 16/17+). Then the chip will stop working again after 6-8 hours or so. Other than that things are still working fine @ 750. I keep temps in the low 70’s during the heat of the day. The miner is otherwise stable right now.

Did you try lowering the frequency and see if the chip works than?

To be honest these miners are a hoot and a half (Y), i’m thinking of ordering more, maybe someone would compete in this with bitmain as well :3 So these will be more cheaper :joy:

I want to order a few of them but im stuck sitting on GPU’s… Until i can sell some of the cards I have im in a bind because I want to continue to support zcash but no point in doing it with GPU’s at this point those ASIC’s are way more efficient

My blog series using a Z9 to test whether it is more profitable to buy+hold or mine+hold coins…
