Overview

The Zcash Ghana Meetup successfully brought together community members, developers, and crypto enthusiasts to explore the history, technology, and future of Zcash.
The event balanced education, hands-on learning, and engagement, concluding with an interactive quiz where winners received ZEC rewards.

Presentations and Sessions

Opening Session

The meetup began with wallet registration (Zashi Wallet) and a warm welcome from the moderator, Atom Sterling, who introduced Zcash as a privacy-focused cryptocurrency.
Participants also viewed a short video presentation on Zcash’s origins, mission, and role in the future of Web3.

Presentation by Atom Sterling – Event Moderator

Atom Sterling delivered a comprehensive talk on:

  • Zcash’s mission as a privacy-preserving digital currency.

  • How Zcash was forked from Bitcoin to introduce shielded transactions for enhanced privacy.

  • The block reward distribution model and the contributions of the Electric Coin Company and Zcash Foundation.

  • Zcash’s relevance to financial inclusion in regions like Ghana, emphasizing low fees, privacy, and accessibility.

  • Opportunities for community involvement in the Zcash ecosystem.

Zero-Knowledge Proofs (zk-SNARKs) Session

In this interactive segment, Atom Sterling simplified complex cryptography concepts using real-world analogies and props.
Volunteers participated in a live demonstration illustrating how zero-knowledge proofs enable truth verification without revealing private information.
He further explained how zk-SNARKs power Zcash’s shielded transactions, ensuring security and verifiability.

Wallet Demonstration (Practical Session)

Participants installed the Zashi Wallet and took part in a guided walkthrough covering:

  • Account creation and setup.

  • Enhancing security using patch accounts.

  • Sending and receiving ZEC transactions.

  • Understanding the difference between shielded and transparent addresses.

Live demo transactions were made during the session, showcasing real-time private transfers on the blockchain.

Zcash Ghana Meetup Campaign on X (Twitter)

Attendees were introduced to a social media campaign that allowed them to earn ZEC rewards by performing a simple engagement task on X (Twitter).
Winners were to be selected and rewarded in ZEC through their shielded addresses.

While the campaign was straightforward, many attendees were new to cryptocurrency and blockchain, making it their first hands-on experience. As a result, participation was limited, though interest remained high for future campaigns.

Attendance

  • Registrations: 15

  • Actual Attendees: 54

  • Total (including organizers): 55

Challenges

  • Registration disparity: 15 registered vs. 54 actual attendees.
