ZecWallet Lite Server now pointing to zec.rocks

Hello!

@zancas and @Juanky pinged me with concerns about users trapped into ZecWalletLite stalling when pinging to a non-working server.

Thanks to @Danika and @Alex_ZF we got in touch with ZecWallet developer and he agreed to point his domain to a working server which Zingo folks determined it would be zec.rocks’s ones. We wanted to plan this a bit more delicately but the developer already pointed his domain to zec.rocks and users reported ZecWallet already trying un-stucking.

Preparing to back up your old wallet.

Please not that ZecWallet WON’T WORK for syncing to chaintip neither to send your funds to another wallet. Users could be able to get past by the loading screen and rescue their private keys from the application in the shape of a seed phrase.

We recommend users to backup their keys as soon as possible and use Zingo! to recover the funds.

Making sure you document your current state of the wallet

  • try to take screenshots of you wallet history and balance detected by Zecwallet if any
  • try to take note or screenshots of transactions, additional derived addresses both shielded and transparent
  • back up the key materials that the wallet lets you back up.
  • DO NOT DELETE THE Zec Wallet APPLICATION
  • Try to document every transaction existing on the ZecWallet application in order to be able to compare with the restored version afterwards and catch any possible funds that were not restored properly. (this can happen to power users because ZecWallet did not handle account and address derivation according to BIP-44 / ZIP-44)

Attempting to restore your old wallet.

Please use Zingo! and not other wallets because Zingo being a distant relative to ZecWallet will be the most suitable to attempt this.

Try to get the wallet birthday to avoid syncing from sapling activation.

If you don’t have a wallet birthday:

  • check the block height of the first transaction that you can detect on your ZecWallet transaction history and substract 100 blocks to that height just to be sure.
  • Otherwise, just use zero (which will default to Sapling activation) or input 419200, which is sapling activation.

Restore the wallet using the seed phrase on Zingo Wallet obtained from OFFICIAL channels.

Caution

  • DON’T ACCEPT HELP FROM STRANGERS
  • NOBODY FROM ZINGO OR ANY ZCASH TEAM WILL EVER ASK YOU FOR YOUR SEED PHRASE
  • DON’T GIVE ANY INFORMATION TO HELPFUL STRANGERS OR POSSIBLE IMPERSONATORS

Things to consider

ZecWalletLite did some incorrect address and account derivation. Zingo folks have worked out some of those issues providing limited backwards compatibility.

It’s very important that you document the state of your ZecWallet Lite application and compare it item to item, transaction to transaction, address to address to the restored wallet to make sure all your funds were detected.

“I restored my wallet on Zingo and I’m still missing funds”

  • check that you haven’t synced this wallet in another application and moved funds.
  • try to compare which kind of funds are missing.
  • try to resync without “sandblasting filters”

It can happen that they are not detected completely.

  • This is not Zingo’s fault. It’s ZecWalletLite’s.
  • Zingo folks have worked some backwards compatibility, but they still need to do work (and probably no funding to do it).
  • Consider getting in touch with them. <— @Zancas can you link a secure channel for people to reach out?

Nice, I have had ZEC stuck in an old phone of mine for years. Will give this a try.

Still no dice, just shows “Zewallet Lite” loading screen and closes.

Version 1.7.20

I have 1.8.8 and worked for me

@pacu You only mention Zingo as a recovery wallet but this should work in any wallet.

Also, does Zingo support alternate account indices like ZecWalletLite?

I’m not sure where you installed ZWL, but you could download the APK for version 1.8.8 from their repository to see if you can update it and get it working.

It was from the Google play store

Yes. keyword here is “SHOULD”

I talked to @zancas a few weeks ago and he walked me through the different issues that they had encountered with regards to non-standard handling of addresses and accounts that ZecWallet was doing. It is the case that users that didn’t go further than just using one address will have their funds recovered completely by any wallet, but it is the case that users that did generate addresses will have problems finding all the funds. I recall Zingo did provide some backward compatibility but there’s more to it than that.

Could you clarify what Zingo does that other wallets don’t in order to recover ZWL funds ?

AFAIK, ZWL doesn’t use diversified addresses and derives addition account indices, but that’s all.

I don’t want to misrepresent what we’ve talked

Nitpick: there is no ZIP 44. That reference should be to BIP 44 / ZIP 32.

Don’t see an APK for Android on GitHub?

Anyone have 1.8.8 they want to share?

Anyone have the Android 1.8.8 APK they can share? I don’t see it in the Github repo

@pacu @Edicksonjga

(yes, I know this very poor opsec, but its to get a small amount from an obsolete phone so I would take the risk that one of our key community members would not send me a malware APK)

I guess the safest way to achieve this is to actually build it from code and attempt to side load it yourself although IDK if thats going to work because I’m not sure that doing so will overwrite the one you already have or whether the same keys would be used. For that case I guess that the inverse is easier: getting the data files and trying to side load those into zec-wallet-lite desktop. Also untested and not recommendable besides the backup.

I can see the APK file there. Let me know if you still can’t see it so I can send it to you. @Shawn
