Overview
The Zcash Ghana Meetup brought together community members, developers, and crypto
enthusiasts to learn about the history, technology, and future of Zcash. The event balanced
education with practical demonstrations and interactive activities, closing with a competitive
quiz where winners earned ZEC rewards.
Opening Session
● The meetup began with registration of Zcash Wallet (Zashi Wallet) and a welcoming note from the moderator, Atom Sterling, who introduced Zcash as a privacy-focused cryptocurrency.
● A video presentation was played to provide participants with a background on Zcash’s
history and its role in the future of Web3.
Atom Sterling – Event Moderator
● Delivered an extensive presentation on Zcash’s purpose as a privacy-preserving digital currency.
● Explained how Zcash was forked from Bitcoin to add privacy features such as shielded
transactions.
● Covered Zcash’s block reward distribution and the role of the Electric Coin Company and Zcash Foundation in its development.
● Spoke about Zcash’s impact on financial inclusion in regions like Ghana, where privacy, low fees, and accessibility are crucial.
● Addressed community participation opportunities and encouraged attendees to explore ways of contributing to Zcash’s ecosystem.
Atom Sterling – Zero-Knowledge Proofs (zk-SNARKs)
● Conducted an interactive explanation of ZK technology.
● Used simple real-world analogies and props, asking volunteers to hide objects to simulate how zero-knowledge proofs reveal “truth” without revealing the underlying information.
● Explained how zk-SNARKs underpin Zcash’s shielded transactions, making them secure and verifiable without exposing details.
Wallet Demonstration (Practical Session)
● Participants downloaded Zashi Wallet.
● The session covered:
○ How to create new accounts.
○ Setting up patch accounts for improved security.
○ Sending and receiving ZEC transactions.
○ Viewing shielded vs. transparent addresses.
● Small demo transactions were made live, showing users how private transfers work on-chain.

Attendees were introduced to a social media campaign that allowed them to perform a simple engagement task on X (Twitter).which allowed them to post their Zcash shielded addresses via

The campaign was a simple task which participants could perform with ease, but many of them were new to the concept of crypto and blockchain technology, hence, were having their first real life experience and exposure to it, thereby couldn’t fully participate in the campaign.

● Practical experience in setting up and using wallets enhanced trust in Zcash’s usability.

● Community strength was reinforced, with participants showing enthusiasm for more such events.
Challenges

Poor network connectivity was a big challenge for us

Some early attendees left a few moments after the event started due to late arrival of most attendees

Refusal to take part in the wallet sign up and X activities by some attendees due to personal reasons

Refusal to participate in photo shoots by some members due to personal reasons
Areas to improve

Encourage community to participate in all activities

Improve on campaign participation by the attendees by assuring members that it is 100% safe to download the wallet
Conclusion
Despite the shortfalls, the Zcash Ghana Meetup was a success. The event educated participants on Zcash’s role in privacy-preserving finance, demonstrated shielded transactions, and encouraged community involvement. Attendees left with both theoretical and practical skills, strengthening Zcash’s position in Ghana’s crypto ecosystem.
