Zcash Unibadan Campus Meetup Report

Advancing Privacy Education Through Community

Hello Zcash community :waving_hand:

I recall one of my teachers in high school always says that,

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

That quote perfectly captures the experience of hosting our recent Zcash Campus Meetup. which brought together close to 100 attendees and demonstrated the growing interest in privacy-focused blockchain technology among students.

This campus-focused event was designed to introduce students to Zcash and the importance of privacy in blockchain, while creating an engaging and practical learning environment.

With strong support from Zcash Nigeria and ZecHub, we were able to deliver an impactful session that combined education, hands-on experience, and community interaction.

1. Strong Community Turnout

The event recorded close to 100 attendees, showing clear momentum for privacy education within university communities.

This level of participation reinforces that grassroots engagement is essential for driving adoption.

2. Back-to-Basics Education Approach

We began with a foundational session on blockchain concepts using the zechub visualizer before introducing Zcash and its privacy features. We also had a little dive in the upcoming MyFirstZcash:flexed_biceps:

This ensured that even beginners could follow along and understand:

* Why privacy matters

* How Zcash solves real-world problems

* The relevance of privacy for students and everyday users

Participants didn’t just learn, they practiced.

* Live wallet demonstrations

* First-time ZEC transactions

* Interaction with privacy tools

Notably, many attendees received ZEC as their first-ever cryptocurrency via the faucet, using wallets such as ZODL(Formerly Zashi), giving them direct exposure to shielded transactions.

4. Gamified Engagement

To reinforce learning, we introduced a quiz session where participants applied what they had learned.

Top participants were rewarded, creating:

* Healthy competition

* Increased attentiveness

* Better knowledge retention

5. Real Adoption Moments

One of the most impactful highlights was guiding participants through:

* Claiming ZEC from the faucet

* Understanding shielding

* Learning how to maintain privacy in transactions

For many, this was their first real interaction with blockchain and financial privacy tools.

Impact

This meetup achieved more than just awareness:

* Introduced students to privacy-preserving blockchain technology

* Enabled first-time crypto usage for many attendees

* Strengthened the Zcash community at the campus level

* Sparked interest in deeper learning and contribution

It’s becoming clear that when people understand privacy, they value it and adoption follows.

Appreciation

Special thanks to:

@lisa001 for ecosystem support

@ZecHub for educational resources, faucet and guidance

Your contributions continue to make privacy education accessible globally.

Privacy is not just a technical feature , it is a fundamental right.

But for it to be adopted, it must first be understood.

This event showed that Education + Community = Adoption.

And if this is what can come from a single campus event, then scaling these efforts

across more universities could significantly accelerate Zcash adoption across Africa.

Way to go Dre! What kinds of questions did the students have? Can you discuss any sticky points they had? Thanks for putting this on! :heart_eyes: :student: :zebra:

Thanks so much dismad! Really appreciate the support :raising_hands:

The questions from students were actually very insightful and showed genuine curiosity, especially since many were interacting with privacy tech for the first time.

Some of the common questions and “sticky points” included:

“Why do we need privacy if blockchains are meant to be transparent?”

→ This was a big one. It opened up conversations around financial confidentiality, personal safety, and how transparency without privacy can sometimes be limiting.

Understanding shielded vs transparent transactions

→ Many initially assumed all crypto worked the same way, so explaining how Zcash enables optional privacy required breaking things down step-by-step.

“Is privacy legal?” / “Can it be misused?”

→ This came up a lot. It showed the need to clearly communicate that privacy is a right, not a red flag, and that tools like Zcash are about user protection.

Wallet setup & shielding process

→ The hands-on session helped, but this was where some participants needed more guidance, especially around moving funds into shielded pools.

Some students even began asking:

What other real-world use cases does privacy tech enable beyond transactions?

And it was explained that privacy can be applied to identity, voting systems, or data protection.

Honestly, these questions reinforced something important for me:

the gap isn’t interest, it’s understanding.

Once concepts were explained in simple terms, you could literally see the shift in perception. People went from being unsure about privacy to actively wanting to use it.

That’s why I strongly believe education is the key driver for privacy adoption, especially in emerging communities.

Looking forward to building more sessions that go even deeper on this.

Super interesting! “Why do you we need cash when credit cards are FAST?”

Hidden assumptions are what kill understanding.

Cash is slower, harder to manage, and yet, is more private! I think we should think carefully about what we build and WHY we build it.

The faucet approach is smart. People learn fastest when they hold something real. Nearly 100 students walking away with their first shielded transaction beats any explainer doc.

Did you track how many kept wallets active afterward? Retention data would strengthen future grant requests.

I’m actually trying to track this based on conversations being held in the group

Lots of the students are concerned about how to earn ZEC rather than buy it from exchange due to my presentation on the security in earning their first crypto just as the faucet did
